Top Adam Hughes Variants & Covers

Requested by Mr. Max Rebo, I believe, and this subject has been done a few times by quite a few others, whether it's the top valuable or the subjective top best or the rarest Adam Hughes comics and covers. I do like Adam Hughes and he is a hot comic cover artist for sure.

I don't know. Not really keen to rehash what's already been done to death out there, so I figure I'll just do a catch up on a few of the more notable or well-known Hughes covers in the collector or speculator conscious currently.

This is not meant to criticize anyone's prior work. Values fluctuate, demand fluctuates, and I do respect the work done by other contributors and give them much props and credit.

All I am doing is an update of sorts based off their findings or values, but as usual, mine will be taken off of GoCollect's eBay sold data or straight from the eBay sold page. If the sources I used based their values on raw copies, the data I present will of course be highly different as they are based solely on CGC 9.8 sales.

So here's a really cool video done last year in 2016 that concerns the top most valuable Adam Hughes covers at the time the video was done. Love the music, by the way!

Okay, now here's the most recent sales data (at the time of this writing) involving the comics or variants graded CGC or CBCS 9.8 from the awesome video above. Remember, the sales data below are eBay sales that GoCollect has recorded at the time of this writing or the 3 month data that eBay's sold page retains.

Once again, this reflects the time that this post was written, and kudos to all who have covered the subject of Adam Hughes covers prior and after this. I'm pretty sure someone else will need to do an update on the information here because it could be long outdated a year from now.

Who knows? Maybe it's outdated already.

Just for the heck of it, here are some more Adam Hughes covers that weren't on the video. These are either other rare variants or really popular or not regular covers.

Whether they are heating up or currently over-looked is a different story but can be kind of determined from the recent sale info provided. Just a note here, over-looked can incorporate collector's just not caring about certain issues at the moment as well.

Values are, once again, the most recent eBay sale price for CGC 9.8 Universal or Signature Series (SS) reflecting the published date of this post. If specified "raw" then it's the most recent raw sale on eBay and there were no slabbed sales on eBay at the time of this writing.

The values/sales on this post will not be updated for a reason, and it's for a time capsule reference to see how well or not they perform in the near or far future. Sound like fun?

Barb Wire #1 "Audacity" variant was a special promotion by Dark Horse in which retailers could send in 20 copies of Marvel’s standard Star Wars #1 first printing to Dark Horse and receive the Barb Wire #1 Audacity variant. This variant has a bloody t-shirt instead of the 1B cover, so there are two versions of that cover.

Red Sonja #8 1:100 raw sale was actually a two issue comic lot that also had the 1:50 RRP Hughes variant of Red Sonja #7. The total bidding sale on eBay for both was $133.50 for both comics on May 8th of this year, 2017.

I really don't know why they do this other than pure greed or stupidity, but 20 or 25 different variant covers? C' mon, people! Let's rehash the 90s speculator boom and also see another comic crash for doing the same stupid mistakes done then.

Another reason why I still dislike most 90s and Modern Age variants and am still wary to even touch 'em. Over-printing is over-printing. Doesn't matter if it's just one cover or if it's the same issue with 25 different covers.

Oh, that rant was directed at the Betty & Veronica #1 comic issue, and I seriously doubt actual demand minus the speculating "flippers" call for even 5 different covers let alone 25. Over-printing "actual" demand...golf clap!

When it comes to the Convergence #0 1:100, I decided to feature the most recent raw sale on eBay instead of the CGC 9.8 that sold March 5th of 2017. The slabbed copy did sell for $129.50, so this pretty much signifies that raw or slabbed copies aren't perceived as much different value wise currently. Convergence cover by Hughes is definitely steaming up or being noticed for sure.

The Limited Ed is a variant of the 2B cover of G.I. Joe #2, and I actually like the reguar 2B cover better than its limited variant. The Baroness? Yowza! Definitely my favorite female G.I. Joe character.

So another and more recent CGC 9.8 copy of the Limited Ed sold on eBay April 24th. It was a Best Offer and don't know what the accepted offer was. Original listing price was $429 and it is also a Signature Series copy.

Concerning the Captain Marvel #1 1:25 AH variant, there has been a recent sale this month, or May the 16th to be exact, that was originally priced at $275 but a so far unknown Best Offer was accepted. Obviously the price accepted was lower than $275.

The most recent sale of the Superman #710 1:10 Hughes variant happened on March 23rd of this year via Best Offer. Actual accepted price I don't know.

Barb Wire #5 was sold in a comic lot that had issue #1A, #1B, #2, #3, #4, and #5 through #8. A more recent one also sold in a comic lot that has an unknown accepted best offer.

When it comes to Adam Hughes and Catwoman covers, they are low print comics. I believe Catwoman #44 starts the Adam Hughes covers and issue #44 has an estimated print run of around 21,570.

Before Hughes cover run from #44 through #83, Paul Gulacy had a nice run providing pencils and covers from issue #25 to issue #42. Although Hughes is definitely hailed for his Wonder Woman covers, I do like his Catwoman covers better.

Catwoman #51 is one of my favorite AH! or Adam Hughes covers. It might be my favorite one hands down, but if you're wondering where his Catwoman covers begin, I believe it is issue #44 and have provided the cover for it for interested parties.

In fact, Hughes has some really great covers in the volume 3 Catwoman series. I love the covers to issue #45 and #46 as well.

The cover to #45 has a wonder feel and the sheer look of terror on Catwoman's face begs the curious question, "What the hell happens to her with Batman in this issue?" Issue #46's Audrey Hepburn inspired Catwoman is just amazing. I mean, it's Audrey Hepburn, you know?

In my opinion that cover should be a classic and I also do love the cover to issue #83. No doubt that Hughes' renditions of Catwoman on that cover also looks like the iconic Hepburn, as well the cover to issue #74.

Aside from the Audrey Hepburn inspired look, covers like Catwoman #50 have a great film noir vibe and look but in color. Looks like a great movie poster for a Zatanna and Catwoman flick actually.

I also love the cover to Catwoman #52. What a vicious looking cover and brings you up close and personal.

Although reflections in goggles aren't really anything new when it comes to comic cover art, I do think it's pretty bad ass that we see the Black Mask's reflection in Selina's goggles. That issue also sees Catwoman off Black Mask but not in such a grueling fashion as the cover implies.

Like Catwoman #52, I do like the cover to Catwoman #60 a lot and it also has the great quality of sucking you or viewer right into the action with a point of view perspective.

Alright, that's it for now, but definitely not all done entirely. Adam Hughes has an impressive body of work and covers. I really should have made the Catwoman section it's own post or article, but I admit that I got caught up in the moment.

So I will most likely be returning to this subject for all those interested in Adam Hughes covers or comics. Unlike the gallery section before the Catwoman cover gallery, the Catwoman covers do have a larger version to view if you click on them.

Clicking on any of the comic covers in the gallery above the Catwoman #45 cover will just take you to the eBay search results for that specific issue. Well, other exceptions are the cover images for the comics depicted in the video, and they also have larger versions if you click on them.

I want to give some much deserved shout outs to Brid's Best for the video and Van Denby's 411 over at CBSI and Aaron Chua over at the Early Retirement Diary.

Everyone have a great weekend and see ya next time for some more comic goodness.

  1. I also like the AH covers of Catwoman #70,#80, Wonder Woman #141,#154,#188, Zatanna #15,#16 and the Power Girl #2 Variant.

  2. Thanx man! Means a lot to me. There' s another honorable mention, which is the Wonder Woman 188 cover. Not to high print run + unusal Hughes cover + black issue make this one to gun for in 9.8.
