Dang, I almost forgot that the Doctor Strange movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch is set to hit theaters in November of this year. Another Marvel movie that's been riddled by fan controversy due to the casting of the character the Ancient One.
Regardless of the controversy, Marvel has just unleashed upon the world a mere hour ago our first look at the Doctor Strange movie with the world premiere of the movie's 1st trailer. I do have to say, I am impressed.
Actually, I'm quite impressed, and the first trailer has definitely piqued my interest a lot more, but if you've yet to check it out, here it is:
Looks great, but I do have to admit that a couple scenes in there reminded me of the movie Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Doctor Strange looks like it's going to be trippy and special effects out-of-this-world.
We get our first look at Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo in this trailer. Not really much or enough to go on concerning that for now. I'm sure more trailers after this one will show more of his big badness.
Now, I did have a good laugh when I first saw Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, and then it did make me think a bit more about why some were upset with that casting decision.
At first when she was cast, I thought they were going a different route with the Ancient One, and maybe not having an East Asian influenced character at all. Well, stupid me.
I did roll my eyes after seeing Tilda Swinton looking and dressed up like a Tibetan or East Asian monk. For all those who claimed white-washing when she was first cast, I honestly and regrettably cannot argue with that now.
Yes, she is a really good actress. No doubt about that, but saying that she's the perfect actor or actress for the part looking like she does in the flick? I dunno about that.
Even more a slap in the face was the casting of Benedict Wong as the character of Wong. They did get the right face, but getting it right concerning the type of role is highly questionable. Wong is Doctor Strange's man-servant, a subordinate, in the comics and most likely an assistant or underling in the Doctor Strange flick as well.
I dunno about anyone else or whether they can read between the lines on those casting calls, but does Hollyweird Marvel and Disney have a problem with an Asian face actually in a position of power or authority that isn't a bad guy? I guess it's okay to get the right face for a character that is a subordinate or a minor, cardboard cut out role though.
Hell, they could've just cast Benedict Wong as the Ancient One and cast Tilda Swinton as Wong, right? Anyways, unlike some fans out there, I'm not gonna boycott the movie though it did cross my mind for a split second after seeing Tilda's ridiculous look in this trailer.
I wonder if they're gonna cast Tilda Swinton for the role of Mulan's mother in Disney's planned live action movie of Mulan? Bwahahaha!
Despite my ribbing and deeper thought about the casting calls for Doctor Strange, I'm pretty excited about the movie from this first look trailer. What do you guys 'n gals think of the first Doctor Strange trailer Marvel just dropped?
