Mantis Confirmed for Guardians of the Galaxy 2

We've got some very recent Guardians of the Galaxy movie news. Yesterday, director and writer of the film franchise,  James Gunn, went on twitter and confirmed that the character of Mantis has been cast for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or vol. 2. Other news is that actor Kurt Russell has joined the cast of Guardians in an yet undisclosed role.

The sexy Mantis will be played by Canadian-born actress Pom Klementieff of Spike Lee's Oldboy fame, and speculation about her playing the role has been around since October of last year when the actress was supposedly in talks with the studio. Not a well-known actress, but I must say she does look the part in my opinion.

So congrats to this lovely and lucky actress in joining the cast! Pom Klementieff is of Korean and French-Russian descent in case you were wondering.

In the comics, the character of Mantis is a member of both the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. Mantis is half-Vietnamese and half-German, and her father is Gustav Brandt, who left her with a sect of the Kree known as the Priests of Pama.

So pretty exciting news. Speculation of Kurt Russell playing Star Lord's mysterious father has already been running rampant.

For those who speculated on Mantis' first appearance in the Bronze Age issue of Avengers #112, good on you. Looks like she's not part of the Avengers team, though.

Besides being a master of martial arts, the Priests of Pama enhanced her mind and gave her telepathic powers. Later her character would develop other known powers as well such as empathy, astral projection, chlorokinesis or the ability to control plants or vegetation, as well as precognition, self-healing, and enhanced durability.

Nice laundry list of powers there, and the character of Mantis was created by Steve Englehart and Don Heck. She becomes a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy in issue #1 of the 2nd series.

So, Mantis will be making her big screen debut in the 2nd installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. Pretty cool news.

Gunn has stated there won't be Thanos or any Infinity Gems in the next Guardians flick, so there's a good chance we still won't be seeing the introduction of Adam Warlock anytime soon. Avengers Infinity War Part 1 does come out a year after Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

I'm thinking Warlock might just be introduced in Avengers Infinity War Part 1. Well, at least, I've got my fingers crossed he does.

Production for the anticipated sequel is underway, and that sucker is slated to hit theaters May of next year.

  1. Hey TCM,

great news. Got that Avengers 112 right on time. However, as stated here before, A. 112 has just a one panel appearance of Mantis, similar to Hulk 180. So I would gun for A. 113 too, where she also graces the cover. Speaking of Wolverine (Nr. 1 limited series), there is an edition with a diamond shaped price tag - is this a reprint?

  2. Sorry, my last comment contained a mistake. Mantis makes her first cover appearance in Avengers 114, but seems to have an appearance in Avengers 113 as well.

    2. Not sure about the diamond being a reprint, but I don't think it is.

  3. Nothing to thank for pal! You did the work and research. As for the Wolverine thing, perhaps one version is the newsstand edition?
