Amazing Spider-Man #50 CBCS 7.0

By Gerry D.

With the success and bad-assery of the new Daredevil series on Netflix, I thought I share one of my more recent purchases that I got: The Amazing Spider-Man #50, the first appearance of Wilson Fisk A.K.A. Kingpin. This book has seemed, to me, like an undervalued key issue for a long time, so I got it late last year before the show came out. You may remember that I mentioned it in the year end wrap up that I wrote.

Vincent D'Onofrio does a very good job of playing the "Kingpin of Crime", and he looks very good for the part. I am happy in the choice of casting him for the iconic part. Although he's not massive like Fisk is in the comics, he is definitely a big enough guy to pull it off.

Now, back to the subject. I don't mind taking a chance on unslabbed books on eBay, but I closely study as many pictures as I can and read the description before I make a decision to buy, which is exactly what I did with this one. If someone lists a book that I want with only one or two pictures, I won't even consider buying it.

But this fixed price listing had plenty of pics and it looked to me to be about a 6.5 or so. The $300 the seller was asking was a little more than I wanted to pay, so I offered the seller $225.

After all the back and forth I ended up buying it for $255. I wasn't upset with that price at all because, at the time, according to GoCollect it was still quite a bit less than what graded 6.5 books were selling for on eBay.

Skip ahead a couple of months. I sent this book into CBCS along with a few other books. Since I'm no expert at grading, I was thinking that it might come back as a 6.0 or at most the 6.5 I thought it was. I never expected it would come back a 7.0. To say I was happy was an understatement.

This is a book that's been on my want list for a very long time and decided it was time to pull the trigger on it and glad I did. This book is hot right now and has seen a huge boost in sales since the show came out.

The most recent sale for ASM #50 at this grade dropped well past the $500 mark. It was hovering around the $350 mark about a year ago.

This book is definitely going stay in my vault for a while. It's a book I want to keep in my collection, not one I'm looking to flip for a quick profit. Until next time....

  2. Hey Gerry D.,

definitely one to own!!! Mostly I just see the 2nd appearance of the Kingpin up for grabs - but you know, you just want to hold the real thing in your hands. Just spotted an A.S. 50 in 8,5 for 675 €. What' s your opinion? For me its still a little to expensive, allthough I see it climbing up there as well...

    1. I guess it all depends what you want to do with it. If you're looking to try and turn it around and sell it for a quick profit, then I'd have to agree that it's a little too expensive. But if you're looking to hold onto it for a while maybe not. As we all know, the comic book market waxes and wanes all the time. It's hard for me to tell but I think this particular book might be hitting a peak right now, but I could be wrong. So I guess to answer your question, I might wait a little while to see what the market does. Just because you miss out on this book right now there are always deals to be found later on. That's just my opinion though.

  3. hey its EC not really related to this but just wanted to mention a key issue alert with Giant Size Defenders 3 1st appearance of Korvac who just might be the GOTG 2 villain. I'm looking at buying a 9.4

  4. Great addition to the collection! What are your thoughts on Daredevil 170 - first meeting of Kingpin and DD? Seems to be a super undervalued key and am really surprised that it can be had for $10-20. Wonder if the market picks up on that.

    1. Actually, Daredevil 170 did make it on to the Daredevil key issues list that was done a while ago. I agree that it is an undervalued key ane you can still get in high grades for fairly cheap. It might be one worth getting. For me $10-$20 for an unslabbed isn't much of a gamble. If it becomes more in demand and the prices shoot up, great. If not, I could probably still sell it for what I paid for it. Since it's not a high demand book, you might even be able to haggle it down a little at your local or at a con.

    2. Hi,

no big deal, but I just stumbled over some information which was new for me: X-Factor 10 - first appearance of Sabretooth in a X-Men related comic. Probably a cheap buy, so no risk in investing here.

    3. I LIKE IT! I just looked over my copy with a pretty big spine roll and you're right. He's shown in two panels...one blurred and one clear as day. Decided to read the issue again just for the hell of it.

Awesome Mr. Rebo! And yep, they are still cheap buys and I think it came out a month before X-Men #213.
