First Look At Jason Mamoa As Aquaman!

Whether you're a DC Comics fan or not, every comic geek has been wondering with anticipation about how Aquaman was going to look on screen. Maybe not dripping with anticipation, but most of us were pretty curious as to how Warner Bros. would draft the character from page to screen.

It was pretty obvious that once Jason Momoa was cast, the studio wasn't going for the traditional Aquaman look. If they did, that definitely would've been a shocker

Most of us out there in geek land anticipated the more gruffy and gritty 90s look, and it appears it's somewhat what we expected. Here's Jason Momoa's first look as Aquaman in Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice.

Now, I gotta admit that it's a cool look for sure, but there's little resemblance of the Aquaman character.

What I mean is that this look doesn't particularly say Aquaman to me. Much like the first teaser pic of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, this is a look you could put in any ancient Greece type film. Hell, you could even slap that look onto a character for a Conan movie.

While the look is cool and the picture is in Black and White after all, you could show this to any non-comic fan and he or she would have a high chance of not knowing it's actually Aquaman. Hell, I wouldn't even know if I had no clue about Jason Momoa cast as the character to begin with.

Take away the trident and just have him in the pic as is, I may just think that Momoa is playing another Game of Thrones type role in some movie I've yet to hear about. Although the Superman costume is a bit different from the comics, show a picture of Henry Cavill in the Man of Steel get up and most anyone will know it's suppose to be Superman, right? Do the same with anyone in a Bat-suit, and it's a no brainer.

Throw this pic up, and I think it's a different story. To me, the trident is the only thing that truly gives the look authenticity.

I know, I'm hard on poor Aquaman, but I have to give props because this look is definitely not lame. I'm actually excited to see how the character is on the big screen.

Actually, I think the A logo discretely on his belt is a nice touch as well. Okay, it's another touch that gives reference to the character.

Then again, if the picture was in color, maybe the costume would have a tinge of Aquaman's iconic orange and green colors. I'm hoping that the costume at least has that. It doesn't have to be big bright orange and green. I'm just saying a tint of it.

All in all, a pretty cool look. Like Wonder Woman's costume though, both barely reflect the iconic look for both characters.

Don't get me wrong here. I am just nit-picking, and I'm not at all disappointed with Wonder Woman or Aquaman's look so far. I wasn't disappointed with the Falcon's get up in Captain America The Winter Soldier, and that get up bore very little to no resemblance to the actual comic character.

I guess I'm just saying I wish some of the costumes actually looked a bit more like the character's costumes in the comics. In the case of Aquaman, I was hoping it would look a smudge more like the 90s version.

What do you guys think of the first look of Aquaman who will make his first big splash on the big screen? Excited or nay?

  1. Don' t know about Aquaman. However, I have a modern DC issue to recommend: Action Comics 662. Can you imagine it' s
the first time Superman reveals his identity to Lois Lane? Would have thought it happened somewhere in the 60' s...

    2. Wow, seriously, it took that long eh? Well, kinda makes sense. Superman and Lois's relationship was all about Superman fooling Lois Lane, and Lois trying to find out who Superman's alter ego was. Thanks for bringing up that issue, man. You learn something knew everyday.

  2. hmmmmmmm.....looks cool, but more Conan than Aquaman. Then again, he might
make Aquaman into an even cooler character...time will tell. lk

    1. I think we will all be surprised by Aquaman, but in a good way when we get to see him live action, but then again what do I know. I though Green Lantern was gonna be good. Still, I'm hoping for the best. Great to hear from ya LK and keep on rockin'.

    1. Lol, Abriel. I think a lot of people are curious about Aquaman being a huge and expected disappointment or being the biggest surprise of the Justice League movie. Either way, I'm sure the ladies will get their eye candy.

  4. No offence but Aquaman always reminds me of the NYCC 2013: Robot Chicken DC Comics Special - Aquaman and the Invisible Jet joke. (chuckles) on Youtube. Check it out if you havent haha.

Coming back to the poster I want to see a trailer of this flick before making any judgements on this as in my eyes this is DC's last shot of getting even close to Marvel.
