Guardians of the Galaxy Key Issues Part 6

Welcome to the last part to this Guardians of the Galaxy key issues list. We are gonna wrap up the Modern Age comics in Part 6 and clean up with a few key issues that I missed concerning a very important character.

All of these I've discussed before on various other key issues lists except for one, which is the first one to kick this off with. If you missed Part 5, just click that blue under-lined link to go back. If you're good to go, let's get these Guardians of the Galaxy key comic book issues done with for now.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 VOLUME 2
Adam Warlock joins team
Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot joins team
Gamora, Drax, Quasar (Phyla-Vell), and Mantis join team
First appearance of new Guardians of the Galaxy

Well, this is the team that the movie is actually based upon, and in this 2nd series of Guardians of the Galaxy, the first issue sees the first appearance of the new Guardians team. Of course, the exception there is Phyla-Vell as Quasar, Adam Warlock and Mantis, but all the others like Gamora, Drax, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon and Groot are in the line up.

This key issue did see heat when the Guardians of the Galaxy flick was first announced and it's still not that easy of find in the market at least online. First appearance of new or modern Guardians of the Galaxy and boatload of members joining up. Guardians of the Galaxy #1 volume 2 was published July, 2008.

eBay - Raw copies present and are already seeing speculator demand push this Modern Age comic up quite a bit. Saw one CGc 9.8 for a whopping $400 and something dollars. Wow, don't even know what to say about that.

mycomicshop - Two CGC 9.8 copies for this one, and I can't believe how over-bloated this comic has become in price. Movie hype or not, it's amazingly ridiculous.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #654
First appearance of Flash Thompson as Agent Venom

Okay, this one is highly unlikely to join up with the Guardians of the Galaxy in any future film since Sony owns the rights to most all Spider-Man characters. The truth is in the new Guardians series, Agent Venom does actually join up for a while.

So Flash Thompson as Agent Venom and his first appearance as the character goes on this list. Amazing Spider-Man #654 is his debut, and I think Agent Venom joins GOTG in issue #13 of the volume 3 series. April 2011 was when Amazing Spider-Man #654 was published.

eBay - Pretty limited selection for both raw and slabbed copies. Not because it's rare, but because most people don't know about it. Don't fall for the listings that say "Hard to Find". Saw a CGC 9.8 and a PGX 9.4 NM there so far.

mycomicshop - Five copies, all raw, and the highest is a 9.2 low NM. 2nd highest copy is a VF/NM. Only copy in actual stock is a FN+, and it's the lowest grade available.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #9
1st Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel

This was discovered to be the 1st true appearance of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. This story hit comic shops a week before Captain Marvel #1 but the story takes place after the first issue of Carol Danver's headlining comic series as Captain Marvel.

Here's the credit page to this comic which pretty much explains it all.

Click on the image to see a bigger version if you can't read the smaller type. Hopefully they will be bigger. If not, here's just a snapshot of the red box that explains Danver's and her Captain Marvel deal between both comic issues.

Not a very high print run for this comic and its estimated print run is around 39,000. Avenging Spider-Man #9 has the cover date of September, 2012.

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 VOLUME 7
Carol Danvers becomes Captain Marvel
1st canonical appearance as Captain Marvel

This one again and it's the first appearance of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel in continuity. Yes, Avenging Spider-Man #9 came out a week before this comic and is the 1st appearance of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. However, the story that takes place in Avenging Spider-Man #9 happens after this issue of Captain Marvel #1.

This one is definitely steamed up for a bit on the market for a pretty recent Modern Age comic.

Since Carol Danvers is going to be Captain Marvel in the cinematic universe, I'll put this canonical debut on this list here. At first I thought Captain Marvel might be a team member of the Guardians for the movie but that does not seem to be happening.

This key comic has an estimated print run of around 46,900, and not much else more to say about it though except it was published September, 2012.

eBay - Appears to be quite a few copies here on eBay. All mostly raw and there should be no problem snagging a high grade raw copy. Did not see any CGC copies of yet.

mycomicshop - Two raw copies here and the highest is a NM. Last option is a VF+. Both are consignment copies. Probably can get it cheaper on eBay.

FANTASTIC FOUR #67
First brief appearance of HIM (Adam Warlock)

Alright, a bit of clean up here with this list as I completely forgot to put in Adam Warlock's key issues as the character is a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and highly connected to members Drax the Destroyer and a key player in the Infinity Gauntlet story line, which Avengers 3 will be based upon.

So Fantastic Four #67 is considered the first brief appearance of Adam Warlock in the market place, and has seen quite a bit of heat considering all the speculation that the character will most likely be introduced in the Marvel cinematic universe in the near future.

He is one of the most highly anticipated characters to do so, and two nods have already been given to him in Thor Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy as well.

eBay - Appears to be a decent selection. Raw and slabbed copies both present at the time of this writing. On the CGC front, highest copies are 9.4 NMs and already past the $1000 mark. There are some JC Penny reprints to be wary of. Also spotted two 8.0 VF slabbers as well.

mycomicshop - Only one FAIR raw copy here. Not even worth mentioning.

ComicConnect - Quite a few copies here with two of them high grade 9.6 and 9.4 NMs, both CGC. Other graded options as well, and some are Signature Series. Raw copies present.

Thor #165 comic cover
THE MIGHTY THOR #165
First full appearance HIM (Adam Warlock)

Jacking this from the Thor key issues list:

With the rumors circulating about Adam Warlock having a very high chance of the character leading up to an onscreen debut, this comic has been gaining a push in demand without even confirmation yet. This is considered the first full appearance of Adam Warlock, as the character HIM.

Lots of debate about whether this issue should be the first appearance of Adam Warlock or Marvel Premiere #1, but for the nay sayers HIM is an early version of Adam Warlock. Even the creators admit to taking HIM and consciously recreating HIM into Adam Warlock.

Regardless, this issue is heating up and a nod to the character in cocoon form was seen in the end credit scene in Thor The Dark World. Things may be looking even better for Thor #165 if that nod turns into something more.

eBay - From the last time I talked about this issue, the selection has dwindled a bit. Raw copies are available and there are CGC slabs. Highest is a 9.4 Signature Series for way too much. Also some regular Universal copies but mostly in the mid-grade.

mycomicshop - Two slabbed copies here. One is a CBCS copy up for auction with less than a day left. Other copy is a CGC 7.5. Highest raw copy is a FN+.

ComicLink - About 7 copies located here. Highest is an 8.5 VF+, but it's a Signature Series and asking a bit much. An 8.0 VF raw copy is the next highest grade, and there's a few slabbed copies in the 7.0 range at the time of this writing.

THE MIGHTY THOR 166
2nd full appearance of HIM (Adam Warlock)

From the 2nd appearances key issues list:

Talk about being in anticipation of a character hitting the movie screen. Boy, the hype for Adam Warlock has been drawn out, but as we near the release of Avengers Infinity War, it's only a matter of time.

The Mighty Thor #166 isn't quite under the radar, and the market definitely knows about it. 9.2 slabs, however, aren't going for crazy prices just yet. Actually, 9.4s and up are already up there in price. 2nd full appearance of HIM (Adam Warlock) was published July, 1969.

eBay - Pretty limited amount of copies for this 2nd appearance of Adam Warlock on the mighty eBay. A few CGC copies and the highest is a 9.8 NM which is already up there in price.  8.5 VF+ Universal label copy is still there. 9.4 NM is still there as well.

mycomicshop - Nine copies now and two are slabbers. Highest slabbed is a CBCS 9.4 NM and is currently up for auction with less than a day left. 2nd copy is a CGC 6.0 FN. The rest are raw, and the highest unslabbed copy is a FN.

ComicConnect - Four CGC copies here with one of them being a 9.4 NM. Other two copies are Signature Series, and the highest SS copy is a low NM 9.2. Last option is a 6.5 FN+, and the only raw copy is a VG+.

ComicLink - Five copies still here and four of them are CGC slabs. Highest is a 9.6 NM+ and the second highest is a 9.4 NM. The NM slab is priced higher than the NM+. The last two CGC options are both Signature Series and one of them is a 9.2 low NM and the other a 6.5 FN+. Raw copy is a FN/VF and pretty cheap.

As I mentioned before, I'm not gonna list all the keys of Ms. Marvel, Adam Warlock in this Guardians of the Galaxy key issues list. I've already listed them in various other key issues lists.

I'll probably expand on this list when more news pops up of GOTG 2, but as for now, this list is temporarily concluded. Thanks for reading and hope this helps you on your hunt. If you missed the prior post, just click the PREVIOUS link to head on back.
