Guardians of the Galaxy Key Issues Part 2

This is a continuation of the Guardians keys list I did way back that pertained to the first movie cast. This key comic book issues list should actually just be called a first appearances list of Guardians of the Galaxy members.

Since I already listed the other character's first appearances in Part 1, I won't go that route again. However, since everyone is wondering or speculating which members will make their onscreen debut in GOTG 2, this list may serve as a resource for some current and former members I've yet to list on Total Comic Mayhem.

Actually, there will be some key issues I've already covered as well, but I promise there will be new additions. These are Guardians of the Galaxy and related key comic book issues. It will be a relatively short list but will incorporate a few parts. Here we go!

First appearance of Carol Danvers

Sorry, since I have to list Carol Danvers key issues as she is the new Captain Marvel and is or was a current team member of the newest incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy. With the Captain Marvel movie confirmed and given a release date, Carol Danvers has relations with the Guardians of the Galaxy team in the comics.

I'm pretty sure this will translate over into the cinematic realm also. So, since she is a member of the team, here's Carol Danvers first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes #13, which is no easy find in high grades at all.

Don't worry, I won't rehash all of Carol Danver's key issues in this list since I've already went through them in the Marvel Super-Heroes key issues list and the Captain Marvel key comic issues list. March 1968 was when this comic was published.

eBay - Still some raw copies left for this key. Prices are already up there. Three CGC copies located. Two are CGC Signature Series 7.5 low VFs, and the last is a Universal 8.5 VF+. Greatly expensive already. 16 watching the 8.5 VF+ and it does have a Best Offer.

mycomicshop - Three low grade raw copies here. Highest is a VG.

ComicLink - Two CGC Signature Series 7.5 low VF copy here. Only two copies here so far.

First appearance of Moondragon as Madam MacEvil

I remember mentioning this one. Just can't remember in what key issues list. Maybe it was one of the Undervalued/Sleepers. Dunno, but before Moondragon appeared as Moondragon, she made her first appearance in Iron Man #54 as Madam MacEvil.

Weird, but this issue is the issue before the marvelous Iron Man #55, which holds the first appearance of Drax and Thanos and host of other first appearances as well. Well, Moondragon was a Guardians of the Galaxy member, and she's also well-known for forcing Thor to be her lover as well. I wonder if that will play out on the big screen.

May be a good chance Moondragon enters the Marvel cinematic universe, but it's in the speculation mill currently. January, 1973 was when this comic was published.

eBay - Quite a few raw copies here on the mighty eBay at the time of this writing. No CGC yet. Looks the market has turned their eyes towards this one. Didn't see any high grade copies but low grade ones are already up there in price.

mycomicshop - Only three raw copies all on consignment here. First is a VG/FN followed by a VG and last is a GD/VG.

First appearance of Mantis

I'm not really sure if I listed this in the Avengers key issues list or elsewhere. It does sound really familiar, but my memory fails to serve me concerning the first appearance of Mantis in Avengers #112. Mantis was a former member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and did appear in the new incarnation for a while also.

Lot's of speculators are saying Mantis will be a new character for GOTG 2, and they may be right. This comic has already taken off due to the speculations. You may have a better chance snagging a raw copy to get this one cheaper than what it's dropping at for CGC slabs.

July, 1973 was when this key issue was published.

eBay - Pretty limited selection. Appears to be only low grade copies left and they are already over-bloated in price. No CGC, but the last high grade CGC to sell was a 9.4 Universal for $355 in November of 2014. Yikes!

mycomicshop - Only one raw GD/VG copy here in stock at the moment.

ComicConnect - Raw 9.2 low NM is up for auction here at the time of this writing. Not much time left on it.

NewKadia - VF+ copy in stock at NewKadia. Only copy there so far.

2nd appearance of Drax the Destroyer

We've got another Bronze Age goodie within the first Captain Marvel series. Captain Marvel #28's key issue status that pertains to the Guardians of the Galaxy is the 2nd appearance of Drax the Destroyer.

Still a sleeper for sure, but this 2nd appearance of Drax seemed to escape me. This Guardians of the Galaxy related key issue also came out in July, 1973.

eBay - Seems to be a limited selection. A few raw copies spotted, but only two CGC copies. One is a 9.6 NM+ and already at the $500 mark and the other is an 8.0 VF Signature Series signed by creator Jim Starlin. Price is not bad for the 8.0 VF slabbed, but raw copies are cheaper. Most of them are mid grade and lower though too.

First appearance as Moondragon
Origin of Moondragon

Here's is the issue where we see the character of Moondragon finally addressed by the name we all know and prefer. Madam MacEvil is a bit cheese.

So Daredevil #105 has the first appearance of Moondragon by name and also holds her origin as well. Purely a speculation buy since nobody really knows if she'll hit the screen in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Who knows, she may do some hocus pocus on Thor in Thor Ragnarok?

Of course, I'm just speculating and part jesting. Not for nothing, Moondragon is a former member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and still has ties with the new group. November, 1973 is the publishing date for this Bronze Age key issue.

eBay - Very limited amount of copies here at the time of this writing. All are raw for now and most are in VG or low grade. May change by the time you read this.

mycomicshop - Only one raw FN+ copy here on consignement.

NewKadia - Only one VG+ copy in stock at the moment.

2nd appearance of Guardians of the Galaxy

I'm just gonna jack this from the 2nd appearances list recently done.

Guardians of the Galaxy is hot! The movie has done overly well, extremely well, and took everyone by surprise this year. A cartoon series is on the way, and the video game is geared more towards kids. Think Marvel is trying to reel in the next crop of comic readers? I do, and it's a good thing.

As for Marvel Two-In-One #5 and the 2nd appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy (original team), this one is slowly catching on. Sellers are already noting it in eBay listings, but the market hasn't fully caught on this one just yet. Only a matter of time though, and for sure. September, 1974 was when this comic was published.

eBay - Still plenty of raw copies on the cheap from when I last talked about this comic. Still the PGX 9.2 low NM with a Best Offer on there. The CGC 9.6 copy was snagged since this comic was featured in the 2nd appearance list.

mycomicshop - Only one GD+ copy left. It's in stock.

Giant-Size Defenders #5
3rd appearance of Guardians of the Galaxy

Unbeknown to most, and no longer you anymore if you didn't know, Giant-Size Defenders #5 sees the 3rd appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's of the original team, of course.

With the Guardians of the Galaxy movie a big hit, it's no surprise that early Guardians of the Galaxy key issues are sought after. Nobody is noting this so far...not Overstreet, not CGC, nor many sellers on eBay know of this significance yet. It's just labeled as a Guardians of the Galaxy appearance.

However, this is the 3rd appearance. After Marvel Two-In-One #5, the GOTG do appear in Astonishing Tales #29 but the story reprints Marvel Super-Heroes #18 so technically not a 3rd appearance. Giant-Size Defenders #5 is the next comic to have the original GOTG team in it in an all-new story, so Ta-Dah!

This 3rd appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy was published July, 1975.

eBay - Limited selection here. Most are raw copies. Two CGC copies with the highest being a 9.4 NM from Canada. It's around the $200 mark. Other slab is a 5.0 copy that ends really soon.

mycomicshop - Raw VG/FN and a GD minus in stock at mycomicshop.

ComicLink - ComicLink brings the CGC awesomeness with four slabbers. Highest is a 9.6 NM+ for way under the $150 mark. Also another 9.6 NM+ for quite a bit more and two 9.4 NMs that are way over priced.

Some old ones I've already discussed on other various key issues lists on this site and there is a new one in Part 2, which is Giant-Size Defenders #5 and the 3rd appearance of Guardians of the Galaxy. I promise there will be more new ones I've yet to discuss that are related Guardians of the Galaxy key issues in later parts to this series.

This is an expansion off of what I already did in Part 1. If you missed it, just click the PREVIOUS link below to go back and check that out. If you're ready for the next part to this series just click the PART 3 link below and continue on.

  1. Have you ever thought about writing an article based on how this whole key issue/movie hype craze started? I know typically we like to say it started with IM #55 recently and evolved into Av. #54/55, but I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on it.

Also, any guesses as to who some of the villains will be in the upcoming films such as Captain Marvel?

    1. Heya, Tim, interesting topic suggestion. I'll have to see when I can come up with that. I have no idea as for upcoming villains. Crossbones will be a baddie again for Captain America Civil War...Nebula will probably be in GOTG 2.

Captain Marvel is a tough one since she really has no main nemesis and shares a rogue gallery of villains with other characters.

I predict A.I.M. will be making an appearance on screen as the director of this branch of Hydra is Baron von Strucker and he's already made an appearance at an end credits scene.

The Grand Master, an Elder of the Universe, is a good candidate to introduce in a future Guardians of the Galaxy. Kang the Conqueror may be a good villain as well since he time hops all the time. Magus, the evil version of Adam Warlock, would be a highly ideal villain for a future phase in Marvel's cinematic universe.

Pretty up in the air so far since we've got a while for these movies to hit the theaters. What are your guesses?

    2. I heard the same about Crossbones for Cap #3.

For Captain Marvel, AIM was actual one of my main guesses for the enemy featured on Earth. I predict Modok might be a player involved. I would assume she might be facing off with the Kree race as a whole so maybe that will take up the majority of the story.

Doc Strange seems pretty clear that it will feature Dormammu and/or Baron Mordo.

Black Panther one could only assume Klaw or Man-Ape are the villains, but to me they don't seem like they could carry a feature film. I'm hoping we get a bigger villain.

I really hope we see Mephisto and Kang in future films but I'm unsure of where they would fit.

    3. Kang would be an awesome candidate for a GOTG movie if it were a stand alone film and didn't necessarily concern themselves with tie-ing that much into the Marvel end game of an Avengers movie.

My reason for this is because the 2008 GOTG series really had a lot of time traveling or time displacement elements in there. I mean how else is Vance Astro able to join up when he's from the 31st century.

And it's not like the movie has to follow the time displacement elements in comics either. I mean they did use Yondu and he's a 31st century Guardians of the Galaxy.

I do think it would be cool to unite the future Guardians of the Galaxy team with the present team, because that would be an epic movie, and Starhawk is already known for time meddling in the comics. So, that wouldn't be too far-fetched.

It worked pretty well with Days of Future Past, and it would be even more understandable for something like that to occur in GOTG since there are characters that do time travel or mess with reality. Just really a thought is all.
