Hellblazer Key Comics List

Alright, since it's been announced for a while that John Constantine will be starring in his own television show on NBC, I'm throwing out some key issues related to the character. I know the series is titled "Hellblazer key comics list", but I'm going to feature a few comics outside of the Hellblazer title by Vertigo.

I feel they do need to be addressed, and these characters just may end up being in the television show. So here we are, and not so surprisingly, we're starting off with some Swamp Thing issues from volume 2.

Swamp Thing #25 Volume 2
  • 1st cameo of John Constantine
Before Swamp Thing #37, John Constantine was shown in one panel in this issue. He was shown unnamed or unidentified, but the industry recognizes Swamp Thing #25 as a cameo and not a brief appearance.

However, some fans are toting this as Constantine's first appearance, and this issue in the future may be recognized as a first brief appearance. It also may not be as well.

Those in the industry need to clarify what constitutes the difference between first appearances for comic books or comic fans will continue to perpetuate misinformation about them and spread what they believe should be a first appearance.

This issue is heating up mildly in the market as many are not aware that this issue predates Swamp Thing #25. It could be that some don't care either.

eBay - Pretty limited selection. Only unslabbed, raw copies and they're already beginning to over-bloat prices on this one for Buy It Nows. Last auction dropped for only $25 bucks, so probably best to wait for an auction on eBay. No CGC just yet, but last CGC 9.8 dropped this month near the $200 mark. Heating up? Yes, it is!

Swamp Thing #37 Volume 2
  • First full appearance of John Constantine
  • First appearance of Sister Anne Marie
  • First appearance and death of Emma
  • First appearance of Ben Cox
  • First appearance of Invunche
Regardless of what's being debated out there, this issue is officially recognized as the first full appearance of John Constantine in comics. There are other important first appearances in this comic within the world of John Constantine also.

Sister Anne Marie becomes one of the spirits that ends up haunting John Constantine in later stories. Her first appearance is shown in this issue. Also, Emma, an early girlfriend of John is first seen and dies in this issue. Why is she important then? She ends up one of the spirits who also haunts John's conscious in later stories as you'll soon see in this key issues list.

The Invunche is a demon that kills Emma in this story. It is unnamed in this issue. It's also the creature that would rape Ben Cox, kill Sister Anne Marie and many more of John's earlier friends.

With the new NBC television series coming up, there's a high probability that many of Hellblazer's characters, including minor ones, will be introduced in the show. This comic has already blown up in demand. I suggested this issue quite a few times already prior. This book is hot now!

eBay - Finding CGC 9.8s will be hard. Right now, 9.6s are being bought up in the market and becoming harder to find as well. One CGC 9.6 copy with a Best Offer option as of this writing. A few lower NM CGC copies. Unslabbed copies are available and being gunned down a lot more since high grade CGCs are becoming harder to find.

Swamp Thing #38 Volume 2
  • 2nd appearance of John Constantine
  • First appearance of Frank North
This is tricky when it comes to the 2nd appearance of John Constantine because this issue came out the exact same month and year of Crisis on Infinite Earths #4! However, this does have the first appearance of Frank North, who was part of the Newcastle Crew, an occult group that John associated with in his early days. Later on, Constantine feels tremendous guilt for the fates of many within the Newcastle Crew. Either way, this is a sleeper comic for now and extremely affordable.

eBay - Only unslabbed, copies available for now on eBay. Quite a few of them actually. A CGC 9.6 dropped last March for only $20 bucks.

ComicConnect - Unslabbed NM copy here. Only one.

Crisis on Infinite Earths #4
  • 2nd appearance of John Constantine?
Wow, it seems that the Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series keeps popping up with key issue goodness that's not widely known. However, this issue is in a tie with Swamp Thing #38 to claim John Constantine's 2nd appearance. Nothing officially stating either comics as his 2nd appearance, but Swamp Thing #38 is being recognized as John Constantine's 2nd appearance by some sources. Up to you whether or not to take a gamble on this issue.

A sleeper comic as well. Affordable even in CGC 9.8s. Well, under a hundred bucks that is.

eBay - Only two 9.8s. One is a PGX, though. The CGC is cheaper. Three 9.6s. Two are under $50, but all under hundred.

mycomicshop - Three unslabbed copies available. Highest is only a VF.

Swamp Thing #46 Volume 2
  • Death of Sister Anne Marie
  • Death of Ben Cox
This issue is important because it has the deaths of two characters that would end up being a group of spirits that haunt John Constantine in later issues. One of these would be Ben Cox, an old friend of John's who was an expert in magic. The Invunche is responsible for these acts, though not identified.

This is a sleeper comic so far. Extremely affordable! Television show may or may not up the demand for this comic.

eBay - Plenty of unslabbed copies and no CGC as of this writing just yet.

mycomicshop - Three copies here as well at the time of this writing. Highest is only a VF also.

ComicConnect - Only one raw 9.2 low NM copy for sale here.

NewKadia - Only two available copies here. Highest is a 9.2 low NM. Second copy is a VF+.

Swamp Thing #48 Volume 2
  • Death of Frank North
Part of the ill fated Newcastle Crew, Frank North bites the dust in this issue. Frank would become one of the spirits who would continually haunt Constantine in his own titled series, Hellblazer. Definitely a sleeper and pretty cheap for unslabbed copies. May be a good one to check the back issue bins at your local comic shop as well.

eBay - No problem finding unslabbed copies to choose from. No CGC as of yet for this key issue. May change by the time you read this or not.

mycomicshop - Four unslabbed copies. Highest are a NM and VF copy. No CGC yet either at the time of this writing.

NewKadia - Only two copies here as well. Highest is low NM 9.2 again. Second copy is a solid VF.

Part 2 is ready so just click the NEXT link at the bottom to see more Hellblazer key comics. There are A LOT of affordable sleepers in this series that may blow up once the television show becomes popular!

Preacher Key Comic Issues Part 3

Alrighty, welcome to Part 3 and the final part to this Preacher Key Comic Issues series. Now, although the upcoming Preacher television show has made a few key issues from the series hot, not a lot of collectors know much about Preacher key issues.

Keyword is yet, but still...since none of the shows have actually aired nor has there been any confirmation of casting, you will be speculating when picking up any of the later key issues. Nobody knows who will be recurring characters on the show or if they'll show up. Even if they do show up on the show multiple times, it does not mean that the market will start gunning for the first appearance of whatever character.

Make no mistake that most on Part 3 to this key issues list is purely speculating. Really up to you, but thought I'd give you fair warning.

Preacher #27
  • First appearance of Amy Grinderbinder
Not exactly a main supporting character, but Amy Grinderbinder is Tulip's old friend and probably will make appearances throughout the series. I have no doubt that the character will make sporadic appearances on the AMC television show, and there is a possibility that the first appearance of Amy Grinderbinder just may go up in value eventually. No promises, though.

eBay - Only unslabbed goodness here as of yet. Not much, though, as expected.

NewKadia - Solid NM copy and a low NM copy here.

Preacher #38
  • First appearance of The Chunt Brothers
What would a comic be without cannibals? I have no clue but here they are...The Chunt Brothers. In the series, Ernie, Karl, and Cyrus Chunt save Herr Starr from a helicopter crash and nurse him back to health only so they could eat him piece by piece. Not very well-known or sought out key issue yet. May never be one. Only time will tell when you're speculating.

eBay - No CGC yet here. Quite a few unslabbed options.

Preacher #41
  • First appearance of Cindy Daggett
  • First appearance of Lorie Bobbs
When the group enter the town of Salvation, they meet Cindy Daggett, a deputy in the town who becomes an ally of Jesse when he takes over the new job of sheriff. She would eventually become sheriff of Salvation when Jesse leaves.

Lorie Bobbs has her first appearance in this issue as well. She ends up befriending Jesse's mother, who has amnesia, and falls in love with Arseface.

eBay - All unslabbed copies and most are in comic lots. Few of these lots are cheap, though. Only one copy selling by itself at the time of this writing. No CGC just yet.

NewKadia - One NM copy at NewKadia. Only copy left.

Preacher #42
  • First appearance of Odin Quincannon
What would a town be without a baddie? Especially in a comic book story? Not a very good one that's for sure. Of course, Odin Quincannon is Salvation's douche bag that happens to run a meat processing plant and even assembled Ku Klux Klan members to teach Jesse Custer a lesson. We can all assume what happened with that.

The first appearance of Odin Quincannon may blow up. It would be quite surprising if this character did not have a few episodes with him in it. He does die in issue #48, however, so no promises that this issue will be a short-term investment comic or not.

eBay - A few unslabbed, raw copies to consider. Not much else to say about that.

Preacher #52
  • Tulip's origin continued
  • Origin of how Tulip and Amy Grinderbinder first meet
  • Origin of how Tulip meets Jesse
Finally, we have the origin of Tulip in this issue. Kinda really far into the series, but it was bound to happen since this character is a main one. Oh, if I forgot to mention, her full name in the comics is Tulip O'Hare, and her issue origins starts in Preacher #51. However, this issue reveals how Tulip and Jesse meet.

eBay - Few unslabbed copies here, but there are some. So far it will be a hunt for super high grade copies for this issue.

mycomicshop - Finally, a Near Mint copy here. No CGC so far, but will change for sure in the near future.

NewKadia - Finally, a NM+ copy! There's also a low NM copy as well.

Preacher #65
  • Death of Herr Starr
  • Death of Featherstone
  • Death of Hoover
  • Genesis detaches from Jesse Custer
Coming close to the finale for this comic series as we see the deaths of some of Jesse Custer's main antagonists. Herr Starr, Featherstone, and Hoover are just a few. It's Tulip who ends up killing Herr Starr. One of the more sought-out later keys of this series. Still affordable unslabbed, though.

eBay - Extremely limited selection. No CGC as of yet.

mycomicshop - Another Near Mint copy here. It is an unslabbed raw copy as well.

Preacher #66
  • Death of God
  • Final issue
This epic comes to a close with this final issue and we find out the ultimate fate of Jesse, Tulip, Cassidy, and the Saint of Killers. Yes, as I revealed in Part 1, the Saint of Killers does kill God. This is a tad more sought out key issue, but still pretty affordable in higher grades if you can find them.

eBay - Very few unslabbed copies to choose from. Limited selection so far, which isn't surprising. I doubt it will always be this way for these issue, especially when the show airs.

mycomicshop - Another unslabbed NM copy here. Only one NM copy, though.

Vertigo Gallery: Dreams and Nightmares #1

I debated on whether or not to even waste my time listing this. As I mentioned before, some are toting this as the first appearance of Preacher and I have to shake my head at that. It's a pin up gallery and a portfolio of artwork! It also showcases the upcoming Vertigo titles of 1995. So, I'm guessing some out there would also consider a promo poster as the first appearance of a character as long as it predates the actual comic book. Wow, okay.

This also came out in Winter of 1995 much like Absolute Vertigo #1, so some are trying to also pawn this "gallery portfolio" as the first appearance of Jesse Custer, Tulip, and Cassidy as well.

Really up to you. I don't consider galleries, advertisements, or previews (basically movie trailers for comics and therefore advertisements) as actual places where first appearances of a comic character should be noted.

To me, they are promotional items. One may as well say that a character featured in Wizard Magazine is the first appearance of that character if the Wizard mag predates the actual published comic. I would say nay to that, but that's just me and how I feel about the subject. You may or may not agree, and I leave it purely up to you.

Anyways, that concludes this Preacher key issue list. If you missed the beginning of this list, you can hit this Part 1 link to read from the start. If you missed Part 2, just hit the PREVIOUS link below.

Thanks for reading and hope this helps you snag some Preacher keys before and if the show causes them to blow up in demand and value! See you soon!

Preacher Key Comic Issues Part 2

Part 2 of this Preacher Key Comic Issues list. Will be some important less known key issue in this part, so let's get to it. If you missed Part 1, just click the link to check that out. Otherwise, continue on your quest.

Preacher #11
  • First God in Preacher series
In this issue, we finally see God that Preacher has been searching for except that God meets and gives Tulip a message instead. This is not the first appearance of the character ever in comics or the DCU/Vertigo, but it is the first time we see Him in the Preacher comic series. Well, at least, that I know of.

eBay - Very limited selection so far here. A small amount of unslabbed copies, and no CGC as of yet. Probably will change for sure.

mycomicshop - Unslabbed low NM 9.2 copy here. There's also a VF 8.0 as well.

NewKadia - Near Mint copy located here. Only one so far.

Preacher #12
  • Death of Jody
  • Death of T.C.
  • Death of Marie L'Angell
Jesse finally gets revenge on the L'Angell clan, and kills those who killed his father and harmed his mother. Yes, he even kills his own gran' ma in this issue, as well as the clan's top enforcers Jody and T.C.

This is definitely a more sought-out key issue and 1st printings are already up there in price. There is what's called the 12U version (non poly bagged) of this comic, which includes any CGC graded copies, since they take them out of the polybags. Polybagged versions are priced higher than CGC 9.8s, but are not dropping higher than CGC 9.8s. Don't let the prices fool you.

eBay - For an issue that's supposedly rare, there's no problem finding unslabbed raw copies of this one on eBay. Prices are already up there for 1st printings.

mycomicshop - Four copies in the NM range for this issue. All are 1st printings. There is one CGC 9.8 copy here for only a $100 bucks.

Preacher #13
  • First appearance of Herr Starr
  • First appearance of Featherstone
  • First appearance of Pouissin
  • First Jesus DeSade
  • First appearance of Hoover
This is one of the more in-demand key issues as it sees the first appearance of Herr Starr and group called The Grail that opposes Jesse Custer throughout most of the series. Herr Starr is a definite fan-favorite and his minions Featherstone and Hoover are supporting characters throughout the series as well.

Definitely one of the Preacher key issues to gun for before the show introduces these characters.

eBay - Definitely a better selection to choose from than some other Preacher key issues in this key comics list. Still, pretty limited so far. Five CGC copies available to snag. This is a more sought-out key issue as Herr Starr is a popular character. Cheapest 9.8 is clocked in at $175 with free shipping, so not entirely too bad. Well, not too bad yet.

mycomicshop - One CGC 9.8 copy here, still more expensive than the one on eBay. Quite a few unslabbed copies. The highest one is a 9.2 and ridiculously more expensive than the 9.8 for some asinine reason.

Preacher #14
  • First appearance of Bob Glover
  • First appearance of Freddy Allen
A minor key issue with two minor characters, Bob Glover and Freddy Allen are sexual investigators. This issue does reveal the secret of the Grail.

eBay - Super limited selection of unslabbed copies so far. No CGC yet either. Not too surprising. I bet a lot of them are going through the grading process at CGC as I write this. Definitely will have to keep a look out if you think this one has a chance of blowing up.

NewKadia - Two copies here. One is a NM and the other a low NM.

Preacher #21
  • First appearance of The Messiah
  • First appearance of Allfather D'Aronique
Two important character first appearances here in this issue. Allfather D'Aronique is the head of The Grail group and The Messiah is a direct descendent of Jesus Christ, whom The Grail organization are trying to protect. The Messiah, who was inbred to keep his blood line pure and divine, was basically an idiot and pawn for The Grail. He dies in issue #24.

eBay - As of now, unslabbed is your best bet. No CGC on the mighty eBay. If buying comics online is your only choice, you'll have to be patient if you prefer graded copies.

Preacher #25
  • Origin Cassidy
Finally, the main supporting character of Cassidy gets his origin story in this issue. An Irish vampire, Cassidy is the best friend of both Jesse and Tulip, and this issue details how he becomes to be what he is.

This should be a key issue to greatly gun for in the Preacher comic series. A definite sleeper so far.

eBay - Same deal with this one. Not that well-known in the comic market as a key issue. Only a few raw copies with no CGC as of yet, but that will change once more realize that the origin of Cassidy is this issue right here. Time to possibly look in those Preacher back issue bins at your local comic shop for this snag.

NewKadia - Low Near Mint copy here. Only one as of this writing.

Okay, this ends Part 2 to this Preacher Key Comic Issues list, but there is a Part 3 and more Preacher keys to consider. Just click the PART 3 link below to continue, or click the PREVIOUS link to read the part before!

Preacher Key Comic issues

As requested and because some of these comics have already blown up due to news of the AMC t.v. series already green-lit, I'm going to rattle off some Preacher key issues. Of course, I'm going to introduce some less known key issues within the series that may blow up when the series actually airs and characters are introduced. So here's a few Preacher key comic issues to keep on the look out for.

Absolute Vertigo
1st appearance Jesse Custer

Okay, more first appearance confusion. Overstreet Guide has this as the first appearance of Jesse Custer. They also list Preacher #1 as the first appearance of Jesse Custer also. CGC notes this issue as "Predates Preacher #1" but notes Preacher #1 as the first full appearance of Jesse Custer, Tulip, and Cassidy.

When I think of a preview, I think of movie previews or movie trailers, which are basically advertisements. Now, if comic previews count as first appearances, then shouldn't advertisements count as well? Wouldn't the first appearance of Batman actually be in Action Comics #12 since there is a panel ad for Detective Comics #27 that shows the character?

Personally, I don't think advertisements should count as a first appearance, and I see comic previews as basically promotional ads like a movie trailer. This is where the debate begins because some do, and regardless of what I think, Absolute Vertigo may be heating up. However, if you look at actual eBay sales for CGCs, no one is paying the 9.8 prices being asked for.

mycomicshop - Quite a few unslabbed copies here. Highest is a VF/NM 9.0. 2nd is a VF+. May be cheaper on eBay or may not be. Best to shop around.

eBay - Plenty of unslabbed copies. There are CGC graded copies, but mostly 9.8s. Only one CGc 9.6 copy. Cheapest 9.8 at the time of this writing is $225. Only CGC copy to sell in the last 3 months is a 9.2 and for $55 bucks.

Preacher #1
First full appearance of Jesse Custer
First full appearance of Tulip
First full appearance of Cassidy
First appearance of Saint of Killers

Because of a television show that will soon air on AMC, this comic has hit the stratosphere and rather quickly in terms of demand and value. This is the actual comic that first sees the characters, and I mean comic book. Not a book that's basically a bunch of previews for upcoming comics.

Also, this comic has the first appearance of Genesis, the entity that uses Jesse Custer as a host. Some fans were trying to state that Hellblazer #60 is the first appearance of Genesis, but writer and creator Garth Ennis put a stop to that, stating that although the characters are similar, there is no connection between the two. End of debate. Thank, God!

Saint of Killers is a fan-favorite and a major supporting character within the Preacher world and ranked in the top 100 comic book villains of all time. The Saint is so badass that he eventually kills God, the Devil, and all the Angels in this comic series. Overstreet Guide has Preacher #2 as the Saint of Killers first appearance, but everywhere else, including CGC, has Preacher #1 as the character's first appearance.

It is pretty much the same for the first appearance of Cassidy and the first appearance of Tulip as well. Different sources are sighting different comics as their firsts, which includes some gallery pin up book.

C'mon, really? For sanity sake, I'm noting what CGC and Overstreet Price Guide designates this issue as. If you want to argue about it, this site is definitely the wrong outlet to do so. I don't determine the key status of an issue.

mycomicshop - CGC 9.8 going up for auction June 7th! There's also an unslabbed low NM 9.2 going up for auction on the same day. This comic is surely hot at the moment.

eBay - Quite a few unslabbed options at various grades, and they're pretty much expensive. CGC 9.8 copies are at extremely ridiculous prices right now, and 9.6s are already dropping around the $300 mark.

ComicLink - Two CGC 9.6 copies located here. Both are priced at $299. One is bid up to only $200 and the other bid up to $210.

Preacher #2
First appearance of Arseface
First appearance of Agent Dinnings

Arseface is another major and fan-favorite supporting character in the Preacher world and Preacher #2 sees the character's first appearance. No doubt that this character will be in the television show and Preacher #2 is already commanding some pretty insane prices at CGC 9.8 high grades.

Agent Dinnings is a very minor supporting character in the Preacher comics. Not sure if this is the character's only appearance or not.

mycomicshop - Unslabbed VF/NM 9.0 copy located here as well as a raw, unslabbed solid FN 6.0 copy. No CGC as of the time of this writing, but since this comic is also hot, I'm sure that will change.

eBay - Not really a problem finding raw copies for this issue. Finding a truly high grade raw copy is a different story. Pretty limited on CGC copies. Two 9.8s located and two 9.6s. Last 9.8 dropped in April for $279.95.

Preacher #5
First appearance of Si Coltrane
First appearance of John Tool
First appearance of Paul Bridges

A journalist and old friend of Cassidy, Si Coltrane makes his first appearance in this issue as well as John Tool and Paul Bridges. Most are minor characters in this series and Si Coltrane actually dies in Preacher #7. Regardless, this key issue is blowing up somewhat in the market.

mycomicshop - Unslabbed solid NM 9.4 for $64 bucks.

eBay - Only a few unslabbed options as well as CGC options also at the time of this writing. Only two CGC copies in fact. Both are 9.8s. Cheapest is $129.99 with a best offer option.

Preacher #8
First John & Christina Custer
First appearance of Jody
First appearance of Marie L'Angell
First appearance of T.C.

All these characters play important roles in the origin of Jesse Custer. Of course, John and Christina Custer are Jesse's parents and Marie L'Angell is Jesse's grand mother, who was matriarch of the L'Angell clan in Angelville.

The L'Angell clan were highly traditional, extremely cruel and tyrannical, in which the elders arranged marriages and imposed absolute control over the raising of children. Christina ran away from her L'Angell family with no intention of ever returning and met John Custer.

A little after having Jesse, both John and Christina were found by Jody and T.C. Jody was the top enforcer for the L'Angell family, and both men brought John, Christina, and little Jesse back to Angelville.

Since this issue gives pretty good insight to the origin of Jesse's roots, I'm pretty sure there will be an episode on the new television show that will introduce these characters. Still not that all sought out of a key issue just yet, though this key issue details Jesse's origin story.

mycomicshop - Only one copy available. It is unslabbed and it's only a low VF or 7.5.

eBay - Pretty limited selection of unslabbed copies on the mighty eBay for this issue as of yet. Even more limited with CGC options. Only one 9.8 Signature Series found so far.

Preacher #9
First appearance of Billy Bob Bobbs

As Jesse deals with his infamous L'Angell family, he further explains his origin to Tulip. This brings in his childhood friend Billy Bob Bobbs, whose family is inbred. Billy Bob's sister Lorie Bobbs will play a role in the series but is introduced later in the series. Another not so well known key issue or very sought after. This issue continues Preacher's origin.

eBay - Will be a hunt for an unslabbed issue on eBay at the time of this writing. Quite limited in the raw realm as well as CGC copies. So far, as of this writing, there's no CGC for issue #9. That will definitely change in the future.

ComicLink - Only one copy but it is a CGC graded one. 9.8 and Signature Signature series as well.

Part 2 to this Preacher key issue list is all ready to go so just click the NEXT link to continue.
