Star Wars Key Comics Part 5

This is final part to this Star Wars key comics list for a while. If you're looking for speculation comics, Disney has already announced that they will not be taking any story lines (adapting) from the Expanded Universe and chances are they will make up a whole set of new characters and disregard the EU as they've done many of times with prior movies.

Not to say they won't draw inspiration from the EU, but they have always regarded the six films as canon for any of the new films set to hit the silver screen.

These last few Star Wars key issues are for fans of the comics or certain EU characters, but will not cover all of them just yet. I may or may not expand on this keys list in the near future.

Click this Part 4 link if you missed it. If not, let's wrap up this Star Wars keys list.

STAR WARS DARK EMPIRE #1-6 PLATINUM EDITION
Platinum edition set variants

Of course, since we're in the fabulous 90s, there were the gimmicky variants covers to this series as well. Actually, a full set of them called the Platinum Edition and they are not hard to spot from the regular first printings.

They have the Star Wars logo in platinum and also Platinum Edition plainly seen on the bottom of the cover. This is not the only variant set this comic series came out with as well. I believe these came out in late 1993, and they are the more expensive out of the gold foil variants, as were limited to only 4000 sets.

eBay - As expected, there are pretty limited options here on eBay, but there are some. Two lots contains the complete set, and there are only two CGC copies. No slabbed copies for issue #1 though for now.

STAR WARS DARK EMPIRE #1-6 GOLD FOIL VARIANTS
Gold Foil cover variants

Adding more to the gimmick covers during the wonderful 90s, it seems that Dark Horse had to include a set of gold foil cover variants for this series as well. These are pretty sought out just like the Platinum Edition covers, but aren't worth as much as their platinum cover counterparts.

These gold foil cover variants were only limited to 5000 sets, so they are pretty rare. This variant set was released in 1993 as well.

eBay - Pretty limited options for the gold foil variant concerning this series on eBay as well. Some have lots containing all six variants. No CGC found yet for these.

STAR WARS DARK EMPIRE II #1
1st issue to continuation of Dark Empire comics

I guess you could say this is the sequel to the Dark Empire series, and this series does end up introducing a few important characters to the Star Wars expanded universe, but that's in later issues though. You'll see who I'm talking about soon.

Anyways, this is the first issue to Dark Empire II, and may be one to consider picking up. If you can get them all cheap in a comic lot at high grades even better. This series is also a six issue limited series, and #1 was published December, 1994, making this a Modern Age comic.

eBay - No scarcity of raw copies here on eBay to snag up. A few listings with the entire set in them. No CGC found for this #1 issue though.

mycomicshop - Only one VF raw copy here, but it is in stock.

NewKadia - Three copies and all are in the NM range. Highest is a NM+. Other two are a NM and low NM.

STAR WARS DARK EMPIRE II #5
First appearance of Jaina Solo in comics
First appearance of Jacen Solo in comics

I mentioned this one already on here before and in the EU, Jaina and Jacen Solo are extremely popular characters. Insiders of the film have revealed that the film will have a female protagonist, and the movie will center around two young leads.

This, of course, has led to speculation that Jaina Solo and Jacen Solo just may be those characters and actress Daisy Ridley and John Boyega may play the Solo twins and children of Han Solo and Princess Leia. Reports, though not confirmed, have stated that two young characters in the new film are looking for Luke Skywalker after his light saber and cut off hand were found.

However, this doesn't mean much as the film makers could easily make up another character for Daisy Ridley to play, and even make up a child of Han Solo and Leia outside of EU canon. More so, Daisy Ridley might not even play a child of Solo and Leia.

Star Wars Dark Empire II issue #5 sees the first comic book appearance of both Jaina Solo and Jacen Solo. The characters first appeared in the novel The Last Command and was created by Timothy Zahn. The comic was published April, 1995.

eBay - A few raw copy options here. No CGC for this one either at the moment.

mycomicshop - Two copies in stock and both are raw. Highest is a VF and lowest is a FN.

STAR WARS DARK EMPIRE II #6
First appearance of Anakin Solo

The youngest of the Solo clan is Anakin Solo, named after his grandfather Anakin Skywalker of course. He is the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia, and the younger brother of both Jaina and Jacen Solo. Like his brother and sister, grandfather, and uncle Luke, Anakin Solo becomes a Jedi.

Not entirely sure if this character will be used in the upcoming Star Wars movies, or even the characters of his brother and sister. Actually, I wouldn't get my hopes up for any of the characters from the Expanded Universe being used.

Right now there is only speculation they may be major characters in the new Star Wars films, but nobody really knows for sure except those who are working closely on the project.

Also, as I have said many times before, Disney have already announced they are not using any stories from the Expanded Universe. They may just make up a whole new crop of Solo kids for the movie, or not even deal the Solo kids at all.

The Dark Empire II series also came with Gold and Platinum variant set covers like the first series. This comic was published May, 1995.

eBay - Quite a lot of raw copies here to choose from. Many are lots with the complete set or with issue #5 and 6. No problem finding this one on the mighty eBay for sure currently.

mycomicshop - Four raw copies in stock at the moment here. Highest are a NM and VF. Lowest are a FN and VG.

STAR WARS HEIR TO THE EMPIRE #1
First appearance of Mara Jade Skywalker in comics
Adaptation of the novel

Mara Jade was first introduced in the novel by Timothy Zahn, and the book has the same name as the Dark Horse comic book. The comic book is actually an adaptation of the book.

Mara Jade started off as an adversary of Luke Skywalker and they ended up falling in love. She ends up becoming a Jedi master and marrying Luke, as well as conceiving their child, Ben Skywalker, named after Obi-Wan of course.

Star Wars Heir to the Empire #1 is her first comic book appearance and was published October, 1995.

eBay - A few copies of this issue on eBay. Not surprised that there's no CGC at the moment though.

mycomicshop - Three raw copies in stock here. Top pick is a NM and second is a VF. Lowest is a FN.

Alright, Part 5 is done and I'm actually ending it right here for now. Speculation on this trilogy is pretty pointless in comic terms for various reasons. One, the folks at Disney are keeping a tight lid on leaks. Two, Disney already refused to use any story lines from the Expanded Universe, and three, every Star Wars movie has disregarded most characters from the Expanded Universe.

When it comes to Star Wars, the comic books usually follow the movies, not the other way around. Still, I've listed some keys pertaining to the Solo and Skywalker clans from the EU and their first comic book appearances.

Most of the solid comic investments are still #1 through 6 and the movie adaptations from the Marvel Comics series. #1 is consistently sought after for obvious reasons and the other movie adaptations are gaining increased desirability.

I may pick up on this series in the far future to list some more first appearances, but they will be all from the Modern Age. Some of the Copper Age and Modern Age comics already listed here are seeing heat due to being fan-favorites of the comic, but some are seeing heat due to speculation which may prove futile.

  1. You psyched me out with the top photo of Star Wars Tales #19! I was expecting you to showcase this comic due to Ben Skywalker's first appearance. Do you prefer that cover or the Han Solo photo one? I've really enjoyed these lists! Thanks for all your hard work.

    1. Sorry about that. I was actually going to put in Star Wars Tales #19 and the first appearance of Ben Skywalker in Part 5, but am debating whether or not to list some other favorite EU characters and where that publishing date falls into.

      Thanks BP, much appreciated.

  2. If you updated this, I would include Son of Dathomir 1-4 since it is officially Canon (I think) and I would obviously throw in some of the new marvel star wars in there. Good job though.

  3. Amazing to now say that Jaina Solo will offically be a black series figure. The Sdcc announced claims it is only do to the fact she is a fan favorite. However that alone should make you really consider buying up Dark Empire II issues 1-6 as the best investment of the decade. It is undoubtedly obvious these 3 Jedi children will be in the next movie and the Last Jedi will be ANAKIN Solo who is the true chosen one capable of manipulating time itself. These comics are going to be key issues rarely is there more than one to a series but this one has 3 as of now with issue #3 Force Tree debut already leaked. If you have the many to invest well picking up these sets are the best idea by far. Still very cheap on Ebay and Mile high comics has a huge selection however JediKnightcollectibles is the seller who seems to be in the know this is how I found these comics everything they have said has come true so I shot them an email asking how they know so much about the movies of course I got what I deserved a quote from yoga search your feelings and you will know this to be true.
