Amazing Spider-Man 135 CBCS 9.4

By: Gerry D

A couple of years ago I saw this book at Stockton Con and was trying really hard to convince myself to get it. It was a CGC 9.4 and was listed at $250 but I figured I'd offer them $200 for it. I finally talked myself out of it for reasons I don't remember.

I put it in the back of my mind until I read the Marvel Premiere #48 article right here on TCM and it got me thinking about second appearances. Almost instantly, this book popped right back to the front of my mind since it is the second appearance of the Punisher. I couldn't afford his first appearance in ASM #129 at the time, so I opted for this one instead. It was definitely one on my want list.

At about the same time I was reading about Marvel Premiere #48, eBay was offering their 4x ebay bucks so I figured that now was the right time to get it. I found this one and it was listed at $230. That was a little bit more than I wanted to pay but it had a "Best Offer" option. I pulled out my Overstreet Price Guide and saw that 9.2 were guiding at $170. I also searched eBay's sold listings at 9.4's and saw they were selling for a little over $200, so I figured I'd offer them $190. Much to my surprise, my offer was accepted. And if you count the $15.20 I made in eBay Bucks, that's not a bad deal at all.

I wish we could see an introduction of the Punisher in a Spider-Man movie the way it was in the comics. I don't see that happening though since the rights to both of the characters are owned by different companies. Why doesn't Marvel Studios and Disney just throw enough money at Sony Pictures to get the rights to him. It would make me a happy guy. But that's a whole different story that I may or may not get into at a different time.

Anyway, this book obviously isn't as coveted as ASM #129, but I think as the price for Amazing Spider-Man #129 continues to rise, more and more people will start looking at Amazing Spider-Man #135 as more of an investment option if they already haven't. But for now I can cross it off of my want list, let it marinate in my vault for a while and see what happens. Until next time...

  3. I always loved the cover of 135. Great Snag! My brother always gave me a hard time about 2nd & 3rd appearances, but I figure the big daddy pulls his children up with him. And it has already paid off...BIG TIME! Case in point....last year Marvel Superheroes 12 (9.0) and the guy offered me #13
(2nd App) for $5 (9.0)....which we all know now to be the 1st Carol Danvers (Ms/Captain Marvel)
My brother called and told me to be on the lookout for it. I said "yeah 2nd Cap Marvel..got it 9.0" lk

  4. Did you get this already graded or is it part of your CBCS submissions from a few articles back?

    1. No. This wasn't one of my CBCS submissions. I bought it on ebay. However, I did finally get the rest of my books back from CBCS. All but one of the books came back close to what I expected.

    2. I'd love to at least see a nod to Frank Castle in the Netflix Daredevil TV series, like have a news flash of him on a TV screen in the back ground with the reporter stating that the Punisher strikes again and kills (fill in the black) mobster.

I think that would be a cool and little thing to throw in there. Sony may work out a deal with Marvel since Sony is disappointed at the last ASM movie's performance and they have no clue how to handle the character or what to do with him in the current movie market.

I mean, pushing back ASM 3 to the end of the line? Nobody puts Spidey in a corner! Spidey should be their #1 cash cow. If you don't know what to do with a character, hand it over to someone who does. It's what Lion's Gate ended up doing with the Punisher....thank God!

I think all the studios are feeling pressure of expanding their cinematic universes and trying to compete with Marvel/Disney, and I think some really lousy comic movies will be a result from the other studios.

    3. I agree that they should give a nod to Frank Castle somewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It could be in anything as far as I'm concerned. Daredevil, Agents of Shield (if it lasts) or one of the many movies that are coming out.

If Sony could get some good writers to come up with a decent script they wouldn't have to worry about making disappointing movies. ASM 2 was just so not good all the way around. Sony seems to be clueless.

However, it feels wrong to have all of these movies from Marvel Studios and not have one of their biggest superheroes not be in any of them. That's just wrong.

I hope that the rights for Spidey end up going to Marvel/Disney, but I just don't see it happening anytime soon. I'm pretty confident that Sony hasn't finished Shumacher-ing him yet.
