Comics to Invest In 2014

2014 has been a busy year for comic movies and television so far, and, thus, a busy year for those investing in comics. Lots of great news has come out, and it seems that comics in the entertainment media will still dominate and continue to expand for quite a few years.

So now that this year is getting close to being over, what were some of the best comic investing choices to snag this year and what are still some of the best comics to invest in as 2014 is closing up? Well, let's go through some!

FANTASTIC FOUR #36

I just recently featured this in the rebooted Fantastic Four key issues list I just finished, and it holds the first appearance of Medusa. Not only is she an Inhuman and part of the royal family, she also becomes the wife of Black Bolt. With recent confirmation of an Inhumans movie and high grade CGC NMs already way expensive, grades in the 8.0 and the lower realm are heating up fast.

Inhumans movie, early Fantastic Four Silver Age, first appearance of a major Inhumans character, what else is there to think about? I think that should be a clear indicator that I am recommending this key issue.

eBay - Quite a few unslabbed copies to choose from, most in the lower grades as expected, but CGCs are gone on the mighty eBay for now.

FANTASTIC FOUR #44

Another first appearance of an Inhuman from the royal family, Fantastic Four #44 holds the first appearance of Gorgon, and this one has been slower to heat up than Medusa's first appearance. Right now CGC 9.4 NMs are in the $400 range, which is pretty much an over-looked key for a Silver Age FF comic. No doubt that Gorgon will be a key player in an Inhumans movie and investors have been slow, or at least slower, to catch on with this one.

This one just may catch on fire sooner or later as more news of the Inhumans project starts to surface. I predict this first appearance of Gorgon will once more word spreads out there in comic investing land. Am I recommending this one? For sure and did so in the Fantastic Four key issues list done this month!

eBay - Same deal as the last time I mentioned this in an earlier post. Quite a few unslabbed copies to choose from, and four CGC 9.4 copies available.

mycomicshop - Only unslabbed copies here still. Highest is a FN. Bunch of lower grade copies in stock at the moment.

ComicConnect - One CGC 9.4 and a bunch of unslabbed copies to consider. Highest raw is an VF+ at the moment.

ComicLink - Still quite a bit of CGC copies here to select from. CGC 9.4s is the highest grade so far.

MARVEL PREMIERE #48

If Marvel Premiere #47 and the first appearance of Scott Lang as Antman is way above your budget, you may want to consider his 2nd appearance in Marvel Premiere #48. CGC 9.8s are still below the $200 mark, and this 2nd appearance of Scott Lang as Antman has garnered quite a bit of interest lately.

No doubt that Scott Lang will be Antman for Marvel's movie franchise, and this character just may enter the mainstream conscious quite soon. Still not too late to get in on this one.

eBay - No problem finding unslabbed copies for this key issue on the mighty eBay for now. Only five CGC copies though and two are 9.8s.

mycomicshop - Quite a few copies but all are unslabbed here at the moment. Highest is a VF+ so far. 2nd highest is a VF.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1

I could recommend this comic every year, and I would without flinching. This is a solid comic investment and the fact that DC Comics and Warner Bros. are finally gonna put a Justice League movie on the big screen has made the demand and value for this comic even hotter. No surprise there.

Even a low grade GD is acceptable and those has seen a pretty nice rise in value this year. Am I still recommending this issue now that 2014 is nearing its end and a peak in demand has already hit? Absolutely, but mining the lower grade ranges may be the way to go for this one.

eBay - Only a few unslabbed copies and they're mostly in the lower grade. A few CGC also mostly in the lower grade as well. There is a 7.5 low VF on the mighty eBay at the moment, however.

mycomicshop - PGX 5.5 is the only slab copy here. Other copy is a cover-less one and it's raw.

ComicLink - About six copies here. Highest grade is a CGC 8.5 VF+. Lower graded copies present as well.

BRAVE AND THE BOLD #28

Here's another example of a solid comic investment that doesn't require a yearly list, and the first appearance of the Justice League of America should be a no brainer. Brave and the Bold #28 is one of the hottest comics of this year particularly because of the movie announcement or confirmation. However, as a Silver Age investment, it's been of the top or best Silver Age comics to invest in for quite a long time prior without a doubt.

With all the new movies lined up on Warner Bros. roster and the various television shows that have aired or is in the works, particularly the Flash, many Silver Age DC Comics are starting to get major play in the market now.

eBay - Pretty limited selection for raw copies but there are quite a few CGC copies. Highest at the moment is an 8.0 VF slab. Mid-grade and low slabbed copies also available at the time of this writing.

ComicConnect - One CGC 7.5 low VF is going up for auction on 11/10/2014. Doesn't say it's restored, so wow!

ComicLink - Two copies are CGC high grades with the first highest being an 8.5 VF+ followed by an 8.0 VF. One mid-grade copy and a few lower grade CGC slabs also.

SUPERMAN #76

The Batman v Superman movie drove up the demand and price for the first meeting or team up between Superman and Batman in Superman #76 this year quite well. Will this comic sustain? Uhmm...yeah! It's the first meeting between DC's two biggest superheroes!

Low grade CGC 4.0s are already dropping on eBay near the $1000 mark. Mid-grade copies already past the $1500 mark. VF and above, expect to shell out a lot more for graded copies. This issue is becoming more scarce to find online, and demand is still hot.

eBay - Both unslabbed and slabbed copies available for now. Highest CGC copy is a 6.0 FN and will cost you some ducats for sure.

mycomicshop - Only one copy and it's a CGC 2.0 GD. No unslabbers here at the moment.

ComicConnect - Only one CGC copy here and it's going up for auction as well on 11/10/2014. It's a 4.0 VG, which should still cost you some dough for this key issue.

Alright, that's not it by a long shot for this list of comics to invest in 2014. We still have quite a few parts to go in the series, and I will be blitzing them out one by one.

There will be comics I've never mentioned on here before in the next few parts coming up. Part 2 to this list is ready so to continue on just click the PART 2 link you see below.

    1. Yeah, 9.8s are going crazy right now. They are very close to hitting the $1000 mark like ASM #300, which I must admit, I do question and scratch my head about...even though I've been recommending them for quite some time. Right now every studio is playing the expand their Universe game, so it's a like they just discovered Pandora's box.

Right now investors are over-looking FF #44, first appearance of Gorgon, but I'm predicting as more news is leaked about the Inhumans movie, they'll start catching on. Besides, FF Silver Age keys in high grades or past 9.2 that aren't already near or above a thousand bucks are becoming few and far between.

Wow, that's a pretty short time. I hope this site has been delivering.

  2. Speaking of Deadpool, have you seen what the movie announcement did to his 2nd appearance, X-Force #2?! NM raw copies are fetching $20-$30 with graded 9.8s hitting the $150+ mark. Hopefully it keeps going up! I'm sitting on close to 40 copies :-D

    2. Agrees with Gabriel, wow! Right now an auction is being bid up $150, but there's also another auction going at $80. Pretty soon, you'll start seeing more 9.8 auctions and if they're going at the same time, you may see price fluctuations, but there's no doubt that the Deadpool movie has made this comic bump up in value, even for raw copies.
