Wolverine Key Issue Comics List Part 6

Welcome to Part 6. From here on out, the Wolverine key issue comics are going to be from the Modern Age. Most, if not all, will still be extremely affordable concerning raw copies. High grade CGCs may be harder to find but still could be quite affordable as well, concerning CGC prices.

2nd appearance of Omega Red
First appearance of Team X

The 2nd appearance of Omega Red and the first appearance of Team X, remembered by Wolverine in a flashback. It's this issue where Wolverine remembers a previous battle a long time ago with Omega Red in which Team X stole the device that Omega Red needs in order to keep living.

A version of Team X was portrayed in the film X-Men Origins: Wolverine but the members of this team was drastically changed for the movie. Once again, Team X links Sabretooth and Wolverine's history in the comic books as well as Omega Red also. X-Men #5 from the 2nd series was published February, 1992.

mycomicshop - No CGC but two unslabbed here. One is only a VF and the other a FN.

eBay - Only one CGC 9.6 NM+ I could locate at the moment, but there are plenty of unslabbed copies for those who prefer raw comics.

ComicLink - Two copies at the moment. One is a 9.8 and the other a 9.6 NM+.

Magneto removes Wolverine's adamantium

This comic was a big deal when it first came out and it's still held up pretty nicely in demand as a Modern Age comic to get from the 2nd X-Men series. This is the famous issue where the X-Men go up against Magneto, and Wolverine comes close to gutting the X-Men's long time nemesis.

Enraged at Wolverine's audacity, Magneto completely rips out the adamantium from his bones, leaving the mutie runt ripped to shreds. Professor X retaliates and mindwipes Magneto, leaving the baddie in a comatose state. October, 1993 is the publishing date for this Modern Age key.

mycomicshop - Same here for this issue at mycomicshop. No CGC and two unslabbed copies at the moment. One is a VF and the other a FN.

eBay - A few unslabbed copies here on the mighty eBay. Most of them are the gold and B&W variants. Only one regular 1st print CGC 9.6 is the highest so far.

ComicConnect - Two copies here. One is a CGC 9.2 but it is the gold retailers incentive. Other copy is an unslabber and advertised as a 9.0 VF/NM.

First bone claws
Reveals Wolverine's claws are not implants
After the ordeal with Magneto, the X-Men struggle to keep Wolverine alive as his healing factor was weakened by the trauma of having the adamantium removed by Magneto. Of course, Wolvie survives the ordeal and it's in this issue where Wolverine pops out the bone claws, confirming that his famous claws are indeed part of his skeletal make up. In the past it was always implied that his claws were implanted by the Weapon X program.

The bone claws were featured in the movie X-Men Days of Future Past. November, 1993 is when this comic was published.

mycomicshop - A NM unslabbed copy located here. The other copy is also an unslabbed VF.

eBay - No problem finding an unslabbed copy of this key issue. A few CGC options as well. 9.8s are present at the time of this writing.

ComicConnect - One unslabbed 9.4 NM copy here at the moment.

Wolverine loses his humanity
Wolverine kills Genesis

Genesis, the son of Cable, has captured Wolverine and tries to rebond adamantium to his bones. The procedure goes wrong and the experiments somehow push Wolverine's evolution to a more feral state and Logan loses part of his humanity.

This key issue is one from the series that is actually noted in Overstreet Guide, and it appears to have some demand as it's worth more than the other common issues within the series. It also happens to be the comic series 100th milestone. CGC 9.8s should still be well under the $100 mark. This was published April, 1966.

mycomicshop - Five unslabbed copies here. No CGC and the highest is a VF.

eBay - Three CGC copies, all of them are the hologram cover. Highest is a 9.8 with two 9.6s at the moment. There are some regular news stand editions unslabbed but not many. Most of the copies for this issue are of the hologram covers.

ComicLink - Only one copy and it's a CGC 9.8.

ComicConnect - One CGC 9.8 copy. It's the hologram cover if that interests you at all.

First appearance of Wolverine Skrull

In typical comic book fashion, some hokey story lines are indeed thrown into the mix, and I was real close to not even put this one in here. Actually, as readers, we don't really know that the Wolverine we're reading is an imposter until a few issues later. Some sources note this as the first appearance of the Skrull that impersonates Wolverine. Some sources note that it's actually X-Men #90 volume 2 where we see the first appearance of Skrullverine. Take your pick of either one.

This story arc would lead to an important key issue, and that's one of the only reasons why it's on this list at all. August, 1999 is the publishing date for Uncanny X-Men #371.

mycomicshop - As expected, only raw copies here at the time of this writing. Three to be exact and the stand out is a NM followed by a VF. Last option and lowest grade is a FN.

eBay - Tons of unslabbed copies to choose from. No CGC at the moment.

Wolverine Skrull revealed

In Astonishing X-Men #3 volume 2, Wolverine is supposedly killed by Death, whom we later learn is actually the real Wolverine. That mess will all be explained soon in Part 7 of this Wolverine key issues list.

In this issue, it's revealed that the deceased Logan killed by Death is actually really the Skrull imposter dubbed by comic fans much later as Skrullverine. This comic was published December, 1999

mycomicshop - Highest is an unslabbed VF copy. No CGCs for this issue as of yet.

eBay - Only one CGC comic up on eBay at the time of this writing. It's a CGC 9.8 Signature Series signed by Kubert. Decent selection of unslabbed copies at the moment.

I wish I could say that Part 6 concludes this Wolverine key issues list but there is a Part 7. As most know, Modern Age comics tend to bore the living daylights out of me, but believe it or not, there are still some more Wolverine key issue comics to go.

If you missed Part 5, you can click the PREVIOUS link below to check that out. If not click the link below to continue on to Part 7!

  1. Hey there Mayhem. Not sure if this constitutes a key issue but what about Wolverine vol 1 #88. I believe this is to be the first meeting of the crazy popular DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE. This is a comic that is really under the radar when it comes to a potential winner. The cover is really deceiving because it looks nothing like deadpool because of the dark shaded areas.

    1. I believe I mentioned that somewhere. Maybe in the Deadpool key issues, but yeah, I'll add it here when I get the chance...thanks for bringing that to my attention Nova!

  2. Np. Mayhem. Keep up the fact tasting work.

  3. Np. Mayhem. Keep up the fantastic work my friend.
