Marvel Super-Heroes Key Comic Issues

This is going to be a short and sweet key issues list dealing with Marvel Super-Heroes key comic issues from volume one. Believe it or not, there are a few important ones within the title that are steaming up.

The first Marvel Super-Heroes title did not start out with the title. It started out as another title and was changed to another about half way through. The first title this series started out as was basically a bunch of reprints or retellings for earlier stories and didn't really introduce any new ones, unlike the titled series it would change into. I won't be listing those with the exception of one. This list will be short and sweet.

  • First issue to the series
This is the first issue to the comic series and before it became the series Marvel Super-Heroes, it started off as Fantasy Masterpieces. Nothing really much else to say about this issue.

Pretty much a minor Silver Age key issue in my opinion, and the last issue with this title is issue #11. October, 1967 was when this issue was published.

eBay - A few unslabbed and slabbed options on the mighty eBay as of this writing. Three Signature Series copies and two Universal copies. Highest of all the slabbed copies at the moment is a 9.4 NM.

mycomicshop - Just a bunch of unslabbed copies in stock at the moment. Highest is a 6.5 FN+. No CGC yet.

ComicLink - One CGC 9.0 VF/NM copy located here for volume 1 issue #1.

  • First appearance of Captain Marvel
  • Title becomes Marvel Super-Heroes
Alright, now we're jumping ahead to the good stuff. Fantasy Masterpieces turns into Marvel Super-Heroes with this issue, but that's not all in terms of key issue importance. This issue also sees the first appearance of Captain Marvel, or Mar-Vell.

Created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan, Marvel acquired the trademark "Captain Marvel" and forced DC Comics to call their titled comic series of the same name and change it to Shazam. The first Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) is a Kree military officer sent to Earth to observe humans as they gain the technology for space travel.

He would align himself with Earth and protect the planet from all threats, even from the Kree empire. The character would later be revamped by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane.

eBay - No problem finding this comic unslabbed here. Quite a few slabbed copies as well. Highest seems to be a 9.2  slabbed copy.

mycomicshop - All slabbed copies here at the moment. Two are CGC Signature Series copies, both signed by Stan Lee. Highest is a 9.2 low NM,  and the last copy is a PGX 7.0 FN/VF.

ComicConnect - A VF+ 8.5 CGC copy is for sale at ComicConnect.

  • 2nd appearance of Captain Marvel
  • First appearance of Carol Danvers
Another important key issue within the Marvel Super-Heroes titled series, I've mentioned this a few times, but what I didn't mention or note is that Marvel Super-Heroes #13 is the 2nd appearance of Captain Marvel. What I did mention and a lot more important is that this issue is the first appearance of Carol Danvers.

This issue, however, is Carol Danver's pre-Ms. Marvel days, and if the Avengers 2 Age of Ultron or the third Avengers movie debuts Ms. Marvel, you can expect this comic to rise in value quite a bit. Actually, as I've mentioned on another earlier post, fans are highly speculating that Ms. Marvel will be introduced on the big screen soon, and this comic is steaming up and has seen a slight bump in demand.

eBay - Selection is better from the last time I recommended this book. A bit more unslabbed copies at the moment, and there are actually some CGC here unlike last time. Actually, only two with the highest being 7.5 low VF.

mycomicshop - All unslabbed copies, except for one, and quite a lot of them. One CGC copy is a low grade 4.5 VG+, and all the raw copies are low grade as well. Highest unslabber is a 5.0 VG/FN copy.

  • First appearance of Phantom Eagle
  • Origin of Phantom Eagle
Okay, a key issue within the series, but a very minor one. This issue features the first appearance of Phantom Eagle, as well as the origin to this not-so-popular character, and this is actually the 2nd Phantom Eagle. The first was a Golden Age character that was featured in the Wow Comics series. Marvel Super-Heroes #16 was published in September, 1968 during the Silver Age.

eBay - Not surprised that there's a very, very limited selection for this comic as it's pretty much not sought after at all. Only one unslabbed copy found so far. No CGC.

mycomicshop - Actually surprised they have this issue in stock, but they do. Four unslabbed copies in stock to be exact and the highest is a 7.5 low VF.

ComicLink - Wow, surprised on this one...There's actually a CGC 9.2 low NM copy here, and it's a Rocky Mountain Pedigree.

  • Further origin of Black Knight
In this issue, Dane Whitman, the Black Knight III, encounters Sir Percy of Scandia, the original Black Knight. Sir Percy details a bit about the origin of the Black Knight legacy and professes that his descendant is worthy enough to take up the mantle and wield the Ebony Blade.

Not that really sought out of a Silver Age key issue, but it is one within the titled series. This issue was published November, 1968.

eBay - Didn't located a single copy slabbed or unslabbed for this issue at the time of this writing. May change by the time you read this, or not.

mycomicshop - Four unslabbed copies in stock with the highest being two FN 6.0 copies. No CGC at the moment and not surprising.

  • First appearance of Guardians of the Galaxy
I've mentioned and recommended this Marvel Super-Heroes key issue on here in the past, and it seems that the Guardians of the Galaxy blew away fan expectations and has received highly positive reviews.

Bodes well for those who got the first appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy in this issue when it was confirmed the movie was happening. Will this key issue still be a good comic investment? Judging from the success of the movie, it looks like it's safe to say yes! Plus, a sequel has already been confirmed.

This issue has the first appearance of Yondu, the only member of the original Guardians of the Galaxy to be in the movie, this is still one of the late Silver Age key issues to snag.

eBay - Extremely hot now but no problem finding unslabbed copies here on eBay. CGC copies a tad more limited. 9.8 located at the time of this writing for mucho bucks. An 8.0 VF is up for auction and ends tomorrow (Sunday). Also a 7.5 with a Best Offer located here.

mycomicshop - Not surprised that they're all dried up at the moment concerning this issue. They did have quite a few copies when I recommended getting the first appearance of Guardians of the Galaxy when the film was confirmed. A low grade copy goes up for auction the 16th of this month.

Not much but a few key issues worth considering within this title. Once again, I did not list any from when the title was Fantasy Masterpieces except for the first one. From issue #1 to 11, all the stories are reprints from other titles and do not introduce anyone like when the title switched to Marvel Super-Heroes.

As promised, short and sweet and this concludes this Marvel Super-Heroes key comic issues from volume one only. Thanks for reading and hope this helps you on your hunt.
