Silver Surfer Key Issues Part 5

We've come to more Bronze Age Silver Surfer key issues in Part 5 for our cosmic Marvel hero. Some valuable key comics and minor ones to go through, but all pretty interesting. Once again, this key issues list spans different titles and will include keys of different characters that are strongly connected to the Silver Surfer, especially heralds of Galactus and those who often appear in his 3rd self-titled series.

You can click this Part 4 link if you missed it, but if not, let's continue this cosmic venture. There may be some surprises in store.

First issue of The Defenders titled series
First appearance of Necrodamus

Since the Silver Surfer has been linked to The Defenders quite often during the Bronze Age, I'll put this one on his key issues list. However, he does not appear in this issue, but he his mentioned by Namor at the very end of the story, which will begin the search for the Silver Surfer and lead to him joining the team.

This issue also has the first appearance of Necrodamus, but the character really isn't tied to Silver Surfer that much. August, 1972 is when this key issue was published, and it is a pretty expensive Bronze Age key in high grades. Definitely no light weight any longer as it was a few years ago.

eBay - Pretty limited selection on the unslabbed front. Don't see that very often. Quite a few CGCs though. Highest spotted is a 9.6 NM+. Quite a few 9.4 NMs as well.

mycomicshop - Only one unslabbed 5.5 low FN at the time of this writing.

ComicLink - Two CGC copies available. Gorgeous 9.6 NM+ located here and the lowest is a 9.2 low NM.

Silver Surfer joins team
The Defenders #2 is the first time Silver Surfer actually makes an appearance in The Defender's titled series. It's also the issue where Silver Surfer actually joins the team a long side The Hulk, Namor, and Dr. Strange.

As we all know, the Silver Surfer has become quite connected to The Defenders team. The comic series was also a long one, spanning 152 issues. October, 1972 was when this bronze age comic was published.

eBay - A few unslabbed copies available, but only one 9.4 NM CGC copy as of this writing.

mycomicshop - A few raw copies here, mostly low grade. Highest is a 5.5 low FN and is in stock, not on consignment.

ComicLink - Only one CGC 9.4 NM copy for Defenders #2.

Silver Surfer leaves team
Namor leaves team
First appearance of Temax
First appearance of Chandu
Defenders #11 sees the first appearance of the Arabian mystic Chandu. Temax and his Earth gnomes were conjured by Chandu. They are vulnerable to water, in which causes them to dissolve.

At the end of this adventure in issue #11, Silver Surfer and Namor leave the team. Didn't take too long for the Silver Surfer to part ways, but he will often show up in their further adventures. The team is left with the Hulk, Dr. Strange and Valkyrie. This was published December, 1973.

eBay - Quite a few copies in the raw, unslabbed department, but so far no CGC on the mighty eBay at the moment.

mycomicshop - Only raw low grade copies here at the moment. VG 4.0 is the highest copy available at the time of this writing. May change once you read this.

First appearance of Firelord
Although the Silver Surfer does not make an appearance in this comic, the character of Firelord is another of Galactus's heralds and will often be a supporting character for Norrin Radd in many other cosmic adventures.

Firelord, real name Pyreus, was a close friend of Gabriel Lan, whose mind was transferred to a robot and became the herald Airwalker. When Pyreus searches for his friend, he comes in contact with Galactus and is transformed into Firelord.

After faithful servitude, Firelord asks for his freedom and Galactus agrees only if he can find a replacement. Firelord travels to Earth to do so. This issue was published July, 1974.

eBay - A few unslabbed copies to choose from, but eight CGC copies currently on the mighty eBay. Three CGC 9.6 NM+s and the rest are 9.4 NMs. This comic is a bit more expensive than the last time it appeared on the Thor key issues list on here.

mycomicshop - Finally some CGC goodness at mycomicshop! Only one though, but it's a high grade 9.6 NM+. A few unslabbed copies as well with the highest a 6.5 FN+.

ComicConnect - Only one CGC 9.4 NM at the time of this writing.

First appearance of Frankie Raye
For those who are fans of the Fantastic Four or Silver Surfer, they'd know that Frankie Raye ends up becoming the herald of Galactus known as Nova. Fantastic Four #164 marks the first appearance of Frankie Raye.

She isn't turned into Nova in this issue, however. That issue comes later and is in another part to this Silver Surfer key issues list, but because she is linked to Galactus, her character will be tied to the Silver Surfer later on. November, 1975 was when this Bronze Age comic was published.

eBay - No problem finding unslabbed copies here, but CGC is a different story. Only one CGC 5.5 low FN copy here at the moment.

mycomicshop - Unslabbed mid-grade and low grade copies here so far. Highest are a FN+ and FN with the others being low grade copies.

First meeting with Dracula
First battle with Dracula
Wow, this issue is going way out of the cosmic realm into Marvel's horror genre, and even though it's pretty odd, this is the first meeting between Silver Surfer and Dracula. Of course, the two battle it out as well.

Not that well-known of a key issue or even that sought out as a matter of fact. It is a minor key related to the Silver Surfer, though. This issue was published November, 1976.

eBay - No problem finding an unslabbed copy here, but only one CGC copy at the present time. It is a CGC 9.6 NM+ copy though.

mycomicshop - CGC goodness here. Once again only one copy, but it's a 9.6 NM+. A handful of unslabbed copies with the highest being a 7.0 FN/VF.

ComicLink - CGC 9.6 NM+ is the only copy here so far.
