Silver Surfer Key Issues Part 4

By the Power Cosmic, we have arrived at Part 4 to this key comics list. There are sure to be some more great Silver Surfer key issues in this part as we are firmly in the Bronze Age of comics. Plenty of investment comics in this episode so be sure to dial into your want lists.

If you missed Part 3, you can click the link to go back and explore that.

Last issue to first titled series
First time Surfer meets Inhumans
First battle with Inhumans
Another great and one of the best Silver Surfer key issues within this titled series.Unfortunately, this is the last issue to Silver Surfer volume 1, and it happens to be the first time he meets up with the Inhumans. Bound to happen since the Inhumans are strongly tied to The Fantastic Four also.

Jack Kirby returns back to the character but only for this issue as the series was cancelled after this issue. Comic was published September, 1970.

eBay - Four CGC copies and two of them are Signature Series. Highest SS copy is signed by Stan Lee and is an 8.0 VF. The other SS copy is only a 4.0 VG but signed by both Stan Lee and Herb Trimpe. The other two CGC copies are regular Universals. Highest is a low VF 7.5 and the other is a 4.0 VG also.

mycomicshop - Only low grade, unslabbed copies here at the moment.

ComicConnect - Two CGC copies here. One is a Signature Series signed by Herbe Trimpe and is up for auction. It's only a 4.0 VG though. Second CGC option is 9.6 NM+. There are quite a few raw copies here at the time of this writing. Highest raw copy is a 9.0 VF/NM.

ComicLink - Only one 9.6 NM+ copy at the time of this writing. May change by the time you read this.

First appearance of Titans Three
Before there was the Defenders, there was the Titans Three! This group consisted of The Hulk, Namor, and the Silver Surfer, and would be a precursor to The Defenders team.

Sub-Mariner #34 holds the first appearance of the Titans Three, and even though they would disband only after another issue, The Hulk, Namor, and the Silver Surfer would continually team up together as part of The Defenders. This Bronze Age key was published in February, 1971, and is not the first appearance of the Defenders as some on eBay are trying to pimp it as.

eBay - Limited selection for CGC copies and there's only three at the time of this writing. Only one Universal copy and it's a low NM 9.2. Two Signature Series with the highest being a 9.4 NM.

mycomicshop - Two raw copies both in the VG range.

Titans Three vs. The Avengers
When you got three heroes with a checkered past in threatening the safety of humanity such as The Hulk, Namor The Sub-Mariner, and the Silver Surfer, it's only natural that the government ain't gonna trust their motives. So, the government calls in the help of The Avengers to check it out, and both teams battle it out in this issue.

Of course, they leave amicably in the end, and the Titans Three would disband and later become The Defenders. March, 1971 was when this issue was published, and the story arc does prelude to the first appearance of The Defenders.

eBay - Pretty limited selection for both unslabbed and slabbed copies so far. Only two CGC copies and one is a Qualified label at a 9.4 NM. The other is a Signature Series 8.5 VF+ signed by Stan Lee.

mycomicshop - Two unslabbed copies on consignment here. Highest is a low VF 7.5, and the other is a 4.5 VG+.

First appearance of The Defenders
Although Silver Surfer did not officially join the team until later, I'm listing this in his key issues list because the Surfer does have a cameo in this comic. Also, it's the first appearance of The Defenders, which Silver Surfer has always been a notable member of.

But, the team started out with just The Hulk, Dr. Strange, and Namor at first. This issue was published December, 1971.

eBay - No problem finding this super key issue on eBay of course. Plenty of unslabbers to choose from, but if you prefer CGC copies, there's only a few of those too. Highest located is a 9.4 NM.

mycomicshop - The folks at mycomicshop aren't bringing in the CGC goodness at the time of this writing. So far nothing but unslabbed copies here. Highest is a FN+ if you prefer your comics raw.

ComicConnect - Only one CGC copy here so far. It's an 8.5 VF+.

First appearance of Airwalker
Getting to the other heralds of Galactus in this Silver Surfer key comics list. This is the first appearance of Airwalker, who is sent by Galactus to retrieve the Silver Surfer, but we don't know that in this issue yet.

Instead, the Fantastic Four are warned of a menace that could destroy Earth and they suddenly meet a man walking on air at incredible speeds. He calls himself Gabriel and announces that the Earth will come to an end and then blows his horn much like the archangel.

We will see his true intentions in the next issue, and the Silver Surfer actually isn't in this issue. March,1972 was when this comic was published.

eBay - Only raw, unslabbed copies at the time of this writing. No CGC just yet.

mycomicshop - More unslabbed copies at mycomicshop. Highest is a FN, but at least it's in stock and not on consignment.

Death of Airwalker
As the Fantastic Four battle with Airwalker they find themselves no match for the aliens vast cosmic powers. That's until the arrival of the Silver Surfer who turns the tide.

Knocking Airwalker from the sky, he crashes to the ground and breaks into pieces, revealing that he was a robot all along. Silver Surfer and the FF soon realize that he was sent by none other than Galactus. This issue came out in April, 1972.

eBay - No problem at all finding this comic unslabbed or CGC'd on eBay right now as of this writing. Plenty of CGC copies to select from. A lot of high grade options with the highest slabbed copy a 9.8. Good stuff.

mycomicshop - Finally, mycomicshop brings the CGC goodness with two graded copies so far. Highest is a CGC 9.6 NM+ and the other is a 9.4 NM copy. No unslabbed for issue at the moment.

ComicConnect - Three copies here available at the time of this writing. Two are CGC graded copies and one is a whopping CGC 9.8. The other CGC copy is a 9.6 NM+. Raw copy here is a 9.2 low NM.

ComicLink - Four copies here with all of them being CGC copies. Three are CGC 9.6 NM+s and the last copy is 9.4 NM.
