Silver Surfer Key Issues Part 3

We got more inter-stellar good stuff in Part 3 to this Silver Surfer Key Issues list. We are heading out of the Silver Age and soaring into the Bronze Age concerning Silver Surfer key comics, so even though many are great investment comics, they'll have a pretty hefty price tag for copies in high grade.

If you happened to miss Part 2 of this key series list, just click the blue link you passed up to surf on back. If you're ready for Part 3, continue on and enjoy!

First appearance of Mephisto
Perhaps one of the Silver Surfer's most notable foes other than Galactus, Silver Surfer #3 marks the first appearance of Mephisto in the world of Marvel Comics. Mephisto has been obsessed with obtaining the Surfer's soul, but has gone on to create a lot of mischief for various Marvel superheroes in a variety of titles and cross overs.

Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, Mephisto was inspired by the Mephistopheles character from the Faust legend. He has gone on to be a popular foe for Thor, as well as being retroactively retconned as the Satan that tempted Johnny Blaze into selling his soul and becoming The Ghost Rider.

Definitely a Silver Age Marvel first appearance key issue that shouldn't be ignored. The first appearance of Mephisto was published December, 1968.

eBay - Quite a few CGC and unslabbed options, but most of the CGC options are Signature Series copies. Only one Universal spotted at this time, and it's a 9.0 VF/NM.

ComicConnect - Two high grade CGC copies located here for now. First is a NM 9.4 and the other CGC copy is a 9.0 VF/NM. Also a raw copy at a FN 6.0. Highest Signature Series is a 9.4 NM.

First time Silver Surfer meets Thor
First battle with Thor
The God of Thunder and the Skyrider of the Spaceways finally meet in Silver Surfer #4. Of course, there's some kind of misunderstanding and the two have their first epic battle against each other.

I really shouldn't have to say this is a great Silver Age comic investment to get, but I will. Thor and Silver Surfer would work together many of times, especially when it concerned Thanos and Adam Warlock adventures. This comic was published February, 1969 right near the tail end of the Silver Age.

eBay - No problem finding CGC copies on the mighty eBay at the moment. Highest are 9.8s and 9.6s. Plenty of slabbed options and a few unslabbed options as well.

mycomicshop - CGC 8.0 here. Three unslabbed copies going up for auction the 19th of July. All lower grade copies.

ComicConnect - Only three CGC copies here at the moment. Two are auctions and one is currently going on at the time of this writing and the other won't go up until August 4rth, 2014. Only one available in stock is a whopping CGC 9.8 for the snagging.

ComicLink - A few CGC copies here at ComicLink. Highest is a 9.4 NM copy. 2nd highest is an unslabbed 9.0 VF/NM.

First appearance of Yarro Gort
I debated about whether or not to include this issue. It is a key issue but of a very minor character who ends up dying in the next issue. Anyways, here it is and this is the first appearance of Yarro Gort, who happens to be the wealthiest man on Zenn-La. He also has a major crush on Norrin Radd's love interest Shalla-Bal and has been trying to get her to marry him for years.

Believing that Norrin Radd has in no way been able to be faithful to her or been destroyed, Yarro Gort transports Shalla-Bal to Earth so she can see for herself and then finally give in to marrying Yarro. This minor but expensive key was published November, 1969.

eBay - No problem finding this bad boy on eBay so far. Plenty of unslabbed copies at the moment. Limited selection for CGC copies though. Highest located is a 9.4 NM.

mycomicshop - CGC 9.0 Signature Series copy here. It's signed by Stan Lee. Unslabbed low grade copies available also. Highest is a VG.

ComicConnect - Three unslabbed copies with only one CGC copy for the moment. Highest slabbed copy is a FN+. The CGC copy is a 9.2 low NM.

Death of Yarro Gort
Yarro Gort and Shalla-Bal are shot down by a dictator named El Capitan, a South American dictator who then captures the pair. Yarro Gort bargains to the dictator to reveal secrets of Zenn-La in exchange for their freedom.

The Silver Surfer aids the Resistance fighters and Yarro builds weapons for El Capitan, hoping they would be used to destroy Norrin Radd as well. Of course, Yarro's plot fails, and he is killed by the Surfer after shooting Shalla-Bal by accident with one of his weapons. The Surfer repairs the ship and sends Shalla-Bal back to Zenn-La, where the technology there can save her. This issue was published December, 1969.

eBay - Only two CGC copies for this key issue. Both are Signature Series and both signed by Stan Lee. Surprise, surprise! Highest of the two is an 8.0 VF at the moment. Plenty of unslabbed copies to choose from.

mycomicshop - Only graded copy and it's a PGX 9.0 VF/NM. Auction for a low grade VG/FN 5.0 raw copy goes up July 19th.

ComicConnect - Only three unslabbed copies with the highest being an 8.0 VF.

ComicLink - Two copies here. One is a CGC 7.0 FN/VF, and the other is an unslabbed copy of the same grade.

First appearance of Doomsday Man
First and death of Dr. Kronton
Published in February, 1970, Silver Surfer #13 marks the first appearance of Doomsday Man. He is an indestructible robot merged with a human, and was designed by Dr. Kronton whom also shares his first appearance in this issue with Doomsday Man.

Dr. Kronton would die by his own creation in this story, and although the Silver Surfer saved the Earth, the people who witnessed the battle would end up blame the Surfer for allowing Dr. Kronton to be murdered. It's no wonder the Silver Surfer would end up turning on humans from time to time in his early comic career.

Doomsday Man would survive though. In later stories, Doomsday Man would be connected to the character of Ms. Marvel as her foe.

eBay - Quite a few options for raw, unslabbers of course. Most seem to be lower to mid grade though. Only three CGC options at the time of this writing. Two are Signatures Series and both are signed by Stan Lee. Highest is a 7.5 low VF.

ComicConnect - The CGC goodness and raw copy goodness is here as well at ComicConnect for this key issue. Two CGC copies with the highest being a 9.6 NM+ followed by a 7.5 low VF. Highest raw copy is a VF 8.0.

ComicLink - A gorgeous CGC 9.6 NM+ is the highest graded copy here so far. 2nd copy available here is a CGC 8.6 VF+.

First time Silver Surfer meets Spider-Man
First Silver Surfer and Spider-Man battle
Here we are with another classic first meeting and battle and this time it's Marvel's most popular hero Spider-Man that the Silver Surfer first meets and has misunderstandings with. Definitely a first meeting key issue between Spider-Man and Silver Surfer that's worth every penny in terms of a comic investment, and one of the sought out Silver Surfer keys for fans of both the character and Spider-Man. This issue is in the Bronze age and was published March, 1970.

eBay - Limited selection but not scarce on eBay for the moment. Four CGC copies on there with the highest being a Universal 9.4 NM. 2nd highest is a Signature Series low NM 9.2 signed by none other than Stan Lee. A few raw copies to choose from as well if that's more your thing.

ComicConnect - Only one CGC 9.4 NM copy here. It has the old CGC label. Two raw copies also. Highest raw copy is a VG/FN 5.0.

ComicLink - Three CGC copies available. Two are 9.6 NM+s. Last option is a 9.0 VF/NM.
