Silver Surfer Key Issues List Part 1

Still in the Marvel mood, and we're gonna explore some of the key issues pertaining to the character Silver Surfer, or Norrin Radd as he was once known on his home planet Zenn-La. This Silver Surfer key issues list will touch upon some comics outside of his self-titled series, and there will obviously be quite a few from the Fantastic Four volume one series which he is first introduced. Actually Part 1 and most of Part 2 will probably be mostly within the Fantastic Four title, so don't be too surprised.

Gonna be a lot of good Silver Age key issues and probably even venture into the Copper Age with this keys list. Probably be a few parts to it as well. Alright, let's take off with the Sentinel of the Spaceways and get these Silver Surfer key comics going. Here's Part 1:

First appearance of Silver Surfer
First appearance of Galactus
Galactus Saga begins
If we're talking about the holy grails of Silver Surfer key issues, Fantastic Four #48 is it and is basically one of the best Fantastic Four comics to invest in as well. This issue marks the first appearance of Silver Surfer and Galactus Eater of Worlds, whom have both become popular characters within the Fantastic Four mythos and the Marvel Universe as well.

Created by the Marvel mastermind duo of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Silver Surfer wasn't actually discussed in the story ideas when Lee and Kirby were plotting out this issue. When Kirby finally submitted the artwork, Stan was shocked to see some guy flying around on a surfboard.

When questioned, Kirby told Stan that he the god-like Eater of Worlds, Galactus, whom was discussed when the two were plotting the story, should have a herald. As for the surfboard, Jack simply said that he was tired of drawing spaceships.

Not entirely convinced, Stan Lee relented and worked on the characterization of the Silver Surfer, who became a key part of the famed Galactus Saga story plot and eventually a popular supporting character for the Fantastic Four. Gotta love it!

Super key and will definitely take a good chunk of your paycheck at high grades. One of the best investment comics in the Fantastic Four series, and there's a lot of them. As for Silver Surfer key issues, probably the best investment wise.

eBay - No surprise that there's no problem finding CGC or unlsabbed copies for this key comic to invest in. Plenty of CGC copies of all sorts of grade at the moment. Highest on there right now is a whopping 9.8.

mycomicshop - Highest is a PGX 5.5 low FN. Another CGC copy at a 4.5 VG+ is a Signature Series signed by Stan Lee.

ComicConnect - The folks at ComicConnect bring the goodness for the first appearance of Galactus and Silver Surfer. Four copies here, and three are CGC. A whopping beautiful 9.8 Universal located. Nice chunk of bills it'll cost ya. There's also a 9.0 and 7.0. As for unslabbed copies, there's only one VG+.

ComicLink - Quite a few CGC copies here. A whopping 9.8 copy is the highest followed by a 9.2 low NM. Other grades available also.

2nd appearance of Silver Surfer
2nd appearance of Galactus
First appearance of Punisher
First Silver Surfer and Galactus on cover
In this famous issue, the Galactus/Silver Surfer saga is continued, and we see the 2nd appearance of Silver Surfer and Galactus who have come to devour Earth in the famed Galactus Saga storyline. In terms of covers, this is the first time we see Silver Surfer on a comic cover for those collectors who are into that.

As for the first appearance of the Punisher, we're not talking about the Frank Castle Punisher here. It's one of Galactus' robots, but this robot was the inspiration that led to the famous 70s Punisher getting his name.

eBay - Quite a bit of copies for this issue as well on the mighty eBay. CGC copies are more selective however. So far an 8.5 VF+ CGC copy is the highest on there at the moment.

mycomicshop - Only two unslabbed copies here at the time of this writing. One is a low VG and the other is a FR/GD.

ComicConnect - Only three copies here, but one is a CGC copy and high grade. It's a 9.0 VF/NM. The other two are unslabbed copies with the highest being a 7.5 low VF followed by a 4.0 VG.

ComicLink - Only three copies here, but one is a CGC 9.4 NM. The other two are a 6.5 F+ and a 6.0 FN.

3rd appearance of Silver Surfer
3rd appearance of Galactus
2nd Silver Surfer cover
Fantastic Four #50 ends the famous Galactus Saga, and in this issue the Silver Surfer, convinced by Alicia Masters, turns on his master and helps the Fantastic Four defeat him. Beaten, Galactus agrees to leave Earth, but punishes the Silver Surfer for his betrayal by creating a force that makes it impossible for the once herald to ever leave.

This is the 3rd appearance of both Galactus and Silver Surfer, and it's the 2nd time the Surfer would be featured on a cover.

eBay - Quite a few unslabbed copies on here if you have no love for CGC copies. If you prefer sure bets, there are a few CGC copies to snag. Highest Universal copy is a 9.4 NM followed by a low NM 9.2.

ComicConnect - Five copies here and two of them are CGC copies. Highest CGC copy at the moment here is a 9.4 NM. Second CGC is an 8.0 VF. Other three copies are all unslabbed and the highest is 5.0 VG/FN with the lowest being a 2.0 GD.

ComicLink - Three CGC copies and two unslabbed copies here. All CGC are  9.2 low NMs so far. Highest raw copy is a VG+.

Thing vs. Silver Surfer
4rth appearance of Silver Surfer
3rd Silver Surfer on cover
We love it when the Thing gets his clobberin' time, and this time ole Ben Grimm gets pissed off when the Silver Surfer is paying a bit too much attention to his girl Alicia Masters. Classic Thing battle soon ensues.

This issue also marks Silver Surfer's 4rth ever appearance and the 3rd time he graces a cover. Like with most early Fantastic Four comics, this is a great Silver Age key issue comic as an investment and still one of the best Silver Surfer key issues to own.

eBay - Good selection here. Plenty of unslabbed copies to consider, as well as CGC copies to snag also. Highest is a 9.8. There are Signature Series available as well if you like signed copies.

mycomicshop - Two CGC copies at the moment. One is a 9.0 VF/NM copy and the other a 7.0 FN/VF Signature Series signed by Stan Lee.

ComicConnect - Eight copies located at the time of this writing on good ole ComicConnect. There are two CGC 9.6s for this issue available, but one of them goes up for auction in August. Last CGC copy is an 8.5 VF+. Rest are unslabbers with the highest being a VF+.

ComicLink - So far there's six CGC copies with the highest a NM 9.4 and lowest a 4.0 VG. Only one unslabbed copy available as well. It is a 5.5 low FN.

Dr. Doom steals Silver Surfers powers
4rth Silver Surfer on cover
Just like in the movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, that wily Dr. Doom is able to steal the Silver Surfer's power cosmic and thus his board, and it happens here in issue #57 of the Fantastic Four.

This issue starts another great story arc involving the Silver Surfer and it is the 4rth time he appears on a comic cover.

eBay - Lots to choose from concerning this issue. A bit more scarce on the CGC front. Five copies but two of them are Restored copies. Highest Universal label is a NM 9.4.

ComicConnect - Only a handful of copies here and they're all unslabbed. Highest is a 7.0 FN/VF mid-grade copy.

ComicLink - ComicLink also brings some CGC goodness. Top graded copy is a 9.0 VF/NM. The last options so far are 7.5 low VFs. Also two raw copies available at a 7.0 FN/VF and a 6.5 FN+.

Silver Surfer regains his powers
All good things must come to an end, especially if you're a villain like Dr. Doom. Of course, Doom loses this battle due to his own arrogance and the Silver Surfer is able to regain his power cosmic and flying surfboard. The Surfer destroys Doom's castle before flying off.

eBay - No problem on the unslabbed, raw copy front here. Only three CGC options to choose from however. Highest is a NM+ 9.6. Second highest CGC grade is a 9.2 NM.

ComicConnect - Quite a few copies on here, but only two CGC. There is a 9.6 however. Highest unslabbed copy is an 8.5 VF+, and it's funny because the unslabbed copy is priced higher than the CGC 8.5 VF+.

ComicLink - Three CGC copies available. A gorgeous 9.4 NM is the highest so far. Second highest is a 9.2 low NM. Last option is a 9.0 VF/NM, but it is a restored copy. No unslabbed copies as of yet.

mycomicshop - Two CGC copies so far. One is a PGX 9.4 NM and the other a CGC 9.2 low NM. Also two unslabbed copies with the highest being a low VG.

We're speeding right along with this Silver Surfer key issues list, jam-packed full of the character's best key comics. A lot of these are some of the best Silver Age comics to invest in, and Part 2 will continue with more investment comics concerning Silver Surfer during that era.
