New Addition to Constantine TV Show Cast!

It looks like the female lead role has been changed up for the new Constantine television series on NBC. It's recently reported from various entertainment sources that the character of Liv played by Lucy Griffiths is out and the gorgeous Angelica Celaya as a different character is in!

Apparently, after the Constantine pilot was shot, producers David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone thought the character of Liv just didn't cut it and wanted a different dynamic than the tired teacher and student premise. As Cerone put it, "Pilots are great because they’re a bit of a litmus test, we get to figure out what works and what doesn’t … Liv is a great character, she’s wide-eyed, she’s reactive, [but] we felt a bit hamstrung by her, frankly.”

It is true that the character of Liv Aberdine was not in the actual comics and purely a creation for the T.V. series. It's also true that the producers wanted the show to be closer to the source material than the movie that starred Keanu Reeves.

Enter Zed, also known as Mary Martin, a character who is actually from the Hellblazer comic books. Because the character has history with John Constantine in the actual comics, the producers opted to bring her into the fold, tapping the lovely Angelica Celaya to replace Griffiths as the female lead.

“She’s someone who can go toe-to-toe with John,” says Daniel Cerone. “She’s intuitive. She can detect bulls–t,”

This move may play better in terms of keeping the Constantine show more truer to the actual comics. No big surprise it's what fans are greatly hoping for, and there's probably little outcry from them concerning this bit of news.

If you don't know about Zed, she is a psychic and former lover of Constantine that helped him rescue his niece, Gemma, and take on the forces of the Resurrection Crusade and the Damnation Army.

For comic collecting fans, this will be a show to follow. It's been reported that the Constantine show will follow the lead of DC's Arrow and drop tons of Easter Eggs and hints at other DC Comic characters. The possible introduction of these other DC characters may be sprinkled throughout the series as well.

Probably a good time to start checking out those Hellblazer key issues.
