The Walking Dead Key Issues Part 2

Strolling right along like the undead with this monster, this is Part 2 for this humble attempt at a Walking Dead key issues list. As I stated in Part 1, I'm not gonna list every Dick and Jane that appears and dies in this series, because there's so many that it seems like nothing really all that special in the world of the Walking Dead.

I will try to get the important keys and variants (though I still don't care much for variants) and introduce some minor ones that aren't on the radar just yet. If you stumbled upon this before reading the previous part to this series, just click this Part 1 link to go back and check that out. If not, let's get this on and enjoy Part 2.

The Walking Dead #14
  • Death of Julie
Since this is an early Walking Dead issue, I'll list this as a key even though deaths of various characters in this comic series are all over the place and quite redundant. So are first appearances as well.

In this issue, the rest of the group enter the prison and meet the inmates. They also find a few vehicles and go back to retrieve the Greene family. Otis stays behind on the farm.

Later, Chris and Julie commit to a suicide pact, but only Julie ends up dying. Rick finds Tyreese holding Julie just when she turns.

eBay - A bit more of a selection than previous keys in Part 1 of the series on eBay. Spotted quite a few CGC 9.8s as well as 9.4s. Even more of a selection for unslabbed copies too.

mycomicshop - CGC 9.8 and 9.6 copies ready to get snagged. No unslabbed copies at the moment.

ComicLink - Only one CGC 9.8 copy here at the moment. Great to price check and get the best deal online for this comic.

The Walking Dead #15
  • Death of Chris
  • Death of Rachel
  • Death of Suzie
A few deaths in this issue. When Julie turns, Chris kills her yet again, sending Tyreese in a fit of rage. He chokes Chris to death and then beats him to death when Chris turns.

They soon realize that they don't need to be bitten to turn, and Rick returns to Atlanta to kill the reanimated Shane. At the end of the issue, Hershel finds the decapitated bodies of his daughters Suzie and Rachel in the prisons barber shop.

In issue #16, it's revealed that Thomas is the one who killed them.

eBay - A bit of a selection for unslabbed copies, and some CGC graded copies available as well. 9.8s are there and dropping a bit past the $100 mark.

mycomicshop - Only one PGX 9.8 copy here available.

ComicLink - One CGC 9.8 copy for sale regarding issue #15.

The Walking Dead #19
  • First appearance of Michonne
  • Death of Dexter

The character of Michonne has become quite a fan favorite, and this key issue is highly sought after and expensive. Michonne is immediately shown in the comic story and is allowed inside the prison along with Otis, who changed his mind.

This issue also sees the death of Dexter, who was shot in the head by Rick.

This comic in CGC 9.8 is already reaching the $600 mark. There are reprints (The Walking Dead Weekly) which are already past $100.

eBay - No shortage of options for this in-demand Walking Dead key issue. Quite a few 9.8s for both Universal and Signature Series, as well as 9.6s and raw, unslabbed copies.

mycomicshop - Two CGC 9.8 copies available here. One unslabbed VG/FN 5.0 copy as well.

ComicLink - Three 9.8 copies. One is a Signature Series.

The Walking Dead #23
  • Death of Allen
  • Rick and Tyreese battle
In the previous issue, Allen gets bit. In this issue he dies. However, the reason this is a fan favorite is more because of the battle between Rick and Tyreese, whom both get into a confrontation in the beginning and then into another scuffle later in the story.

This book is reaching near $100 dollars for CGC 9.8s. Still a pretty affordable Walking Dead key at high grade.

eBay - You can still get this key for under $100 at high grade CGC 9.8s. There's a few on eBay, as well as plenty 9.6s. Raw copies are no problem finding as well.

ComicLink - One CGC 9.8 just waiting to get snagged and added to your vault.

The Walking Dead #25
  •  First cover by Charlie Adlard
This issue is a key and sought out because it's the first cover of the series drawn by penciler Charlie Adlard. Nothing really key worthy happens in the story. They are still seeking refuge at the prison.

This issue is the first and only issue to have the title logo in the middle of the cover if that counts for anything spectacular?

eBay - A minor key so far that can still be snagged for under the $100 mark. Selection for CGCs are a bit tight, though. Plenty of unslabbed copies to choose from, many toting high grade.

mycomicshop - Unslabbed 9.2 low NM copy. Only copy available here.

The Walking Dead #27
  •  First appearance of the Governor
  • First appearance of Martinez
  • First appearance of Bruce
  • First appearance of Gabriel
More additions to the cast. The most recognizable and popular is the Governor, also known as Brian or Philip Blake, whom was his brother and took his name after Philip passed. The Governor's real name is Brian Blake.

This comic also sees the first appearance of Woodbury, the town where Glenn, Rick and Michonne, whom were investigating a helicopter crash, travel to and end up meeting Martinez and the Governor for the first time.

Story ends with Martinez and Wes leading the scouting party to meet the Governor and end up at a huge stadium with an arena filled with zombies. The Governor tells Rick and his scouting party that he feeds strangers to them.

Definitely a more sought out key and commands a higher price. Not cheap in 9.8 grades.

eBay - Great selection of CGC copies to choose from. 9.8s are no problem finding at fixed price. Auctions are a different story. May be able to get one cheaper from an auction. A few unslabbed copies.

mycomicshop - Quite a few CGC 9.8s and 9.6s. Some are Signature Series. No unslabbed copies. Pretty good selection to see if they're cheaper deals than the ones listed on eBay.

ComicLink - Three CGC copies. Two are 9.8s for this key and the other is a 9.6.

The Walking Dead #28
  • First appearance of Doc Stevens
  • Rick's hand chopped off by Governor
In this issue, we find that the Governor is not such a great guy and plans to feed Rick, Glenn, and Michonne to the zombies in the arena, just like he did with the helicopter survivors. Knowing that Rick, Glenn, and Michonne are staying somewhere, the Governor asks Rick, but Rick lies. The Governor cuts Rick's right hand off and is taken to Doc Stevens where he is treated.

This is becoming more known as an important key issue amongst fans, though unslabbed copies are pretty affordable for now.

eBay - CGCs are dropping near the $200 mark and just a little below it. Only a few 9.8s and 9.6s. 9.6s are getting up there as well for this key. Quite a bit of unslabbed copies, but not sure if they're crispy high-high grade.

ComicLink - One CGC 9.8 copy here at the time of this writing. Could change by the time you read this, or not.

The Walking Dead #29
  • First appearance of Alice
  • First appearance of Bob
  • Governor rapes Michonne
Rick meets Alice when he wakes up at the Woodbury clinic, immediately noticing his hand is cut off. The end of the story sees the Governor visiting Rick to tell him that he raped Michonne, plans for Rick to be an arena fighter, and let Glenn go in hopes that Glenn will lead them to the prison that the Governor has learned about. The thing about letting Glenn go is not true and is explained in the next issue.

This is a minor key so far. CGC 9.8s can still be snagged under $100, around the $50 to $60 range. At least, that is, for now.

eBay - A few CGC options under $100, but only one at $69 for 9.8 located. Unslabbed copies available as well. Will have to shop to find raw copies that are truly high grade like advertised.

mycomicshop - Three CGC 9.8 options and three unslabbed options. Highest raw copy is a 9.2 low NM. Can probably get this cheaper on eBay.

ComicLink - Only one copy available. It is a CGC graded copy, and it is a high grade NM 9.8.

The Walking Dead #33
  • Michonne revenge on Governor
Another momentous and fan-favorite issue within The Walking Dead series. In this key issue, Michonne and the Governor throw down and Michonne gets her revenge on the Governor.

She ends up beating the Governor unconscious, only to continually awake to discover various mutilations Michonne has done to him before passing out again.

The last is cutting his penis off, barely missing a major artery, yet leaving him alive. Michonne leaves and joins up with Rick, Martinez, Alice, Glenn and Doc Stevens at the helicopter crash site.

In the previous issue #32, Martinez helps Glenn, Rick, and Michonne escape. Doc Stevens and Alice ask to go with them and are welcomed. Michonne stays behind to confront the Governor which leads up to this fan-favorite key issue #33.

eBay - CGC 9.8s are already dropping quite a bit past the $100 mark. 9.6s are still below that price range but nearing it for the original red cover. There's a few 1st printing #33s unslabbed copies. Watch out for the The Walking Dead Weekly reprints. Don't get one of those by accident if you're hunting for 1st prints.

mycomicshop - Four CGC 9.8 copies available. One is a Signature Series. One unslabbed, raw copy. Good enough selection to price compare to get the best deal for this Walking Dead key.

ComicLink - Two CGC copies available at ComicLink. One is a 9.8 and the other a 9.6.

The Walking Dead #33
  • Michonne revenge on Governor
  • 2nd Print Blue Variant Cover
Though the regular 1st print of issue #33 is still a widely desired Walking Dead key, the 2nd printing with the blue variant cover is more sought out by fans of the series. CGC 9.8 copies of this variant cover is extremely more expensive and valuable than the original in the same grade.

eBay - Definitely less options for the 2nd print blue variant. I did spot a CGC 9.8 copy that may put quite a dent in your bank account. CGC 9.6s aren't cheap either and getting up there. Didn't see any unslabbed copies at the time of this writing yet.

mycomicshop - Only one CGC copy at mycomicshop. It's a 9.8 copy and Signature Series. It's signed by Robert Kirkman.

ComicLink - Only one CGC 9.6 for the 2nd printing variant to issue #33.

  1. big fan of your blog....i believe issue #24 should be a key issue being it is tony moore's last cover...i think hes sketches of the characters and zombies especially were great

    1. Thanks for the 411. I may use your suggestion later, but for now, pretty burnt out on Walking Dead. I'm sure I'll revise it sooner or later.
