Spectacular Spider-Man Key Comic Issues Part 3

Part 3 to this Spectacular Spider-Man Key Comic Issues list. Just a warning concerning Part 3: This is full of minor key issues at the moment. I have no idea if they'll ever awaken from their slumber.

You can visit the link if you missed Part 2 and then navigate back here later, or you can continue on if you already read the previous post to this series.

Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #90
  • 1st new black costume
According to Overstreet, this issue is in a tie with Amazing Spider-Man #252 and Marvel Team Up #141 for the first appearance of the black costume. All three of these comics were released in May, 1984. This is a widely more well-known Spectacular Spider-Man key issue, and another one of the best ones to snag from this comic series.

eBay - At the time of this writing, the highest is only one CGC 9.6. Extremely over priced considering a CGC Signature Series signed by Stan Lee sold for only $107 something dollars this month of May.  9.0 and 9.2 available. Raw copies available as well. If you're looking for a high grade CGC on eBay, probably best to wait for an auction.

NewKadia - Four copies here. Highest is a VF+.

mycomicshop - Wow, no CGC for this comic? Only unslabbed raw copies and the highest is only a VF? Not bringing the goodness on this key issue comic at the time of this writing.

ComicConnect - CGC 9.4 copy here.

ComicLink - Four CGC options at ComicLink. No 9.8s though, Highest is a 9.6.

Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #107
  • Death of Jean DeWolff
  • First appearance of Sin Eater
Wonder if I still have this issue or not. If I do, I doubt it's in any condition worth an investment, but I did like the story line a lot as a kid. Jean DeWolff was a captain of the NYPD who befriended Spider-Man and was a great supporter and ally of the Webslinger, while most of the cops were hostile towards him thanks to The Daily Bugle and J. Jonah Jameson

As for Sin Eater, I liked the character a lot, except for the purple pants, but he was still pretty cool. Really great story line that's often over-looked. Even if this isn't much of an investment comic at the moment, it's still a great read. The story arc is from this issue to Spectacular Spider-Man #110. Good stuff.

eBay - CGC 9.8 for under a $100 dollars. Only one found online. Free shipping as well.

NewKadia - Four copies here. Low NM for sale here for this sleeper.

mycomicshop - Raw copies available at the time of this writing. Highest is a FN.

ComicConnect - CGC more your taste? Then ComicConnect delivers with a 9.6 for well less than a hundred!

ComicLink - Another CGC 9.6 for only $50. There's a buyer's premium if you don't pay by check with ComicLink.

Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #128
  • New Blackcat costume
Blackcat gets a new costume in this issue, and it's extremely goofy looking. No way better than her original look, which is probably why they eventually went back to it. Thank the heavens for that.

NewKadia - Six copies here. NM raw copy for super cheap.

mycomicshop - Very Fine is the highest here. Raw copies only. No CGC just yet.

eBay - No CGC copies as expected. Plenty of cheap unslabbed copies.

The Spectacular Spider-Man #134
  • First issue with titled shortened to The Spectacular Spider-Man
  • Sin Eater released from prison
Stan Carter is released from the crazy ward and tries to fend off his Sin Eater personality. Never knew this was the issue that had first switched to the shorter title. You learn something new everyday.

Not a very sought out key issue, but a key issue nonetheless. Think I'm gonna search for this in my junk collection and give it another read.

NewKadia - If you're more into raw copies and not into CGC slabs, there's a handful of copies, NM copy being the highest.

mycomicshop - Three unslabbed copies. VF is the highest copy here so far.

eBay - Plenty of unslabbed copies for super cheap.

The Spectacular Spider-Man #136
  • Death of Sin Eater (Stan Carter)
Loved this comic as a kid and wished they hadn't killed off Sin Eater. Great story. Read this multiple times. They should bring back Sin Eater for the comics and use him in a Punisher movie as a villain.

A key issue but not a very well-known or sought out key issue, at least for now. Could change. Could not. Definite sleeper.

NewKadia - Another NM copy for those who prefer unslabbed copies. Bit of scrolling required to see this listing.

mycomicshop - Two raw copies. Very Fine copy is the highest.

ComicConnect - 9.8 raw copy located here.

eBay - One CGC 9.8 and a 9.6 found. CGC 9.8 is a Signature Series signed by Stan Lee for less than $200. The CGC 9.6 is a regular Universal and ubber cheap. Of course, there are unslabbed copies as well.

Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #138
  •  First full appearance of Tombstone
Okay, I guess we get the first full appearance of Tombstone here, and the one in Web of Spider-Man #36 is a first brief appearance? Web of Spider-Man #36 does predate this issue. Overstreet notes this issue as his first full appearance, though, and Web of Spider-Man #36 as his first appearance.

Not a very well-known key issue at the moment and very much a sleeper.

NewKadia - Low Near Mint copy for sale at NewKadia.

eBay - Plenty of unslabbed, raw copies to choose from. No CGCs yet at the time of this writing.

  1. Thanks for the info! Didn't know about Black Cat's new costume. Glad they changed it back too!

  2. It was a pretty terrible outfit change...reminds me of Mockingbird from the West Coast Avengers.

  3. Issue #87 is flying under the radar but I think will be key in the future due to Black Cat's popularity right now and possible movie appearance. Peter takes off his mask and reveals his true identity to Black Cat. Great cover too.
