Comic Fans Threaten Rape Over A Criqtiue?

Holy moly! I know us comic fans are passionate creatures. We love our heroes and our comics, and we defend them often in heated battles, especially online where any basement dwelling turd can be a keyboard tough guy.

I love the comic community. Always will, but that doesn't mean there aren't some asshat comic fans out there.

Now this news is about a month old, just found it while surfing cyber land. All I can say is unbelievable!

I'm not female, nor am I a big supporter on the whole feminist rant. Still, I am pretty appalled at the comments I read.

So this female journalist, Janelle Asselin, who use to work as a DC Comics editor, gives a bad critique on the new Teen Titans #1 cover. Now granted she did make the comment about Wonder Girl on the cover having overly large and unrealistic breasts, which comic fans with two marbles in their heads know that body proportions are overly exaggerated when drawn for males and females in comics.

But, hey, who doesn't like talking about breasts? She's talking about them, and I like talking about them so it's all good to me.

In reading the original article on Comic Book Resources, it did seem like a critique of a cover that had to do with the alienation of female and minority readers. I don't necessarily agree with her points or views. If you look at how some female cosplayers try to sell all these sexed up prints of themselves in comic book costumes, I don't think that cover alienates females. It's not like I try to pimp People and Vogue magazine on the ladies, nor do I constantly compare them to the models in them. They're usually way far ahead of me on that topic. Then again, I'm not a female, so what do I really know about the subject?

Still, though, an opinion is an opinion. Some fans didn't like hers, and started commenting, "Femnazi", "Feminist" and then went even as far as to threaten raping Janelle Asselin in the comments section. Dude, I may not know much, but that's not friggin' cool.

Some will start with the name calling. Sure, that's expected. Rape comments, though? Going a bit too far. There's some women-hating, mental issues going on there, and I'm betting some sexually frustrated individuals pissed off cause the opposite sex wont let these guys' wee wees get anywhere near them.

Even a comic book artist seemingly got offended by her negative critique of the cover. Man, so in graphic design class when we had critiques on every project done, I should've just went off on anyone who didn't like my project? I must've missed the memo on that one.

And it seems like it's all the rage to do on the internet. I once saw on Marvel's fanpage on facebook posting pictures of cosplayers at a comic convention. They were posting pics of kids cosplaying and one pic was a black kid in a Captain America costume.

Of course, someone had to comment, "Blacktain America", or say, "Since when was Captain America black?" I dunno, maybe it's me, but I felt those comments were just dumb. It's a kid, man, and the fact the kid digs on comics is awesome to me. Actually, a female that digs on comics is also awesome to me as well.

By the way, there actually was a black Cap named Issiah Bradley, who underwent testing on the Super Soldier Serum to try to recreate the original serum giving to Steve Rodgers. There were also other guys who where Cap as well. Rodgers wasn't the only one.

As stupid as that comment was towards the kid, it's no where as dumb as threatening physical harm on a person. C'mon, just for critiquing a comic book cover? There are worse and more offensive things people talk about online.

This incident also reminds me of another incident where a contributing journalist did a review on a small comic convention in Florida for some newspaper. It wasn't a great review at all, and she did write some negative comments about some costumes that cosplayers wore.

All the sudden, all these comments just poured out, bashing the journalist, demanding an apology and whatnot. Although, I didn't agree with the journalist's statements and was even taken aback by her downing some cosplayers, c'mon let's admit it. Sometimes we go to comic shows and see a costume we don't particularly care for and think to ourselves, that's lame. Even the comic show that got the negative review was up in arms and egging fans to get their pitchforks out.

That's like a movie studio getting all pissy and demanding an apology from movie critics for giving bad reviews on a flick they just released. Wow, okay, send me the memo when that becomes standard practice.

In the case of threatening rape and sexually harrassing Janelle Asselin, that's some low brow shit. I'll admit that I can get pretty darn low brow at times, especially if we're talking about boobies, but never to that extent.

Also, just an observation here, but how come she didn't get a single death threat, like Dan Slott did for killing off Peter Parker? Hers just had to do with rape. Not like either of those threats are cool by any stretch of the imagination.

Oh, wait I just received a memo on that...still says not cool to do. Maybe she does have a point in her write up after all?

  1. People talk smack online and half the time the Most Hard Core Talk is usually some 15 year old kid using his mom's computer, under the name "BitchSlayer1". Time for dinner....bitchslayer. ; )
Everybody wants to be the "Fast & Furious" Tough Guy. It's quite a rarity online to find a real soul, and not some ego trying to one up everybody else. When people cross the line it adds shock value and they get a reaction out of others, so it becomes their "attention getter"....Lame. Opinions are just that...opinions....not worth losing your cool over. lk

    1. haha@BitchSlayer 1. I like the Slayer part, made me want to listen to them. I hear ya L.K. about the genuine part. I don't even write how I really talk. Put a curse word in every other sentence and that would be more genuine to how I really speak.

Totally agree, and it is lame.

  2. will you be making a walking dead key issue list? I know it's a modern series but it's popular and the comics are valuable in most cases

    1. I have been grabbing some early keys with tv/movie deals for comics like "Thief of Thieves",
"HAUNT" & "Strain". Hoping one of them go like Walking Dead #1. lk

    2. yeah that would be nice for two reasons; 1. you beat the crowd before they find out or buy the comics 2. You get more money buying it sooner than later

    3. Hoping they all go like Walking Dead #1, or even Chew would be fine. Great snags LK. Thanks for sharing them too.

    1. lol, nah, just knew you'd be more on the ball about Walking Dead keys than I'd ever get to start working on it. You got the persistence and drive...keep it up. I'll post a TWD list eventually, but I doubt it'll be that much different than the one you already got going. Great work!

    3. Easy...from the fact that you're out there looking for this stuff called key issues...it takes quite a bit of time...believe me...plus, my super powers are both reading between the lines and mind reading.

Walking Dead keys are crazy...quite of the popular keys are variant covers from that series....yikes!

  4. lol, but you're right variants are worth crazy money as well! so how hot do you think that izombie show will become?

    1. That's a good question, but I can't really foresee how the mainstream will take to the iZombie show or not. I think it has a really good shot, though.

So far it's an original and fresh spin on the whole zombie genre. Even with the popularity of Walking Dead, if you actually break the core story down, it's a cookie cutter formula within the zombie genre. There's nothing original about the WD formula at all. Unknown epidemic turns majority into zombies, survivors traveling around trying to survive and not get bitten or eaten, survivors killing zombies, zombies killing survivors....Pretty standard, but people like it. Some just like eating meat and potatoes every night.

Maybe they'll like iZombie. Maybe they won't. As for me, I'm interested in seeing something different pertaining to the whole zombie thing.

What you think, Gabriel? Would it be a show that interests you?

    2. lol would it interest me? no because I don't like horror or anything to do with it the exception being that I'm making money with it! I think the show will be popular but it won't be like walking dead is because people don't like change or more specifically don't like to deal with it.There have been countless studies on the subject and I believe that's what's going to happen again imo!

    1. Not a big horror fan either, and certainly not a zombie fan whatsoever either. The whole zombie premise bores me to death...pun intended...but a lot of people like it. Of course, there's a very small chance that the i Zombie tv show would ever be as popular or more popular than The Walking Dead show.

However, there's been a lot of rave reviews about the i Zombie comic and for the exact same reasons I stated about it being different and a fresh spin on the genre. People do get tired and bored of the same old same old. Whether this is the right time for the i Zombie show is the money question. I personally welcome it.

  6. lol it definitely will have interest especially since it's being made into a tv show that alone will raise the prices as to how popular it will be I can't say, with all the horror you recommend watching I'd have thought you like the genre!

    1. What are you talking about? What horror show or movie have I recommended people watch?

  7. what will go up in value is the i-zombie comics because a tv show will be made about it, the solomon kane movie that is in the must watch section is pretty scary but then again I'm scared of anything lol!
