The New Mutants Key Issues List

Getting into a full-on copper age title here. All of these New Mutants key issues will reside within the copper age, except for one.

On that note, most of these comics will be sleepers and not highly-sought out for. Therefore, they may be a little hard to find when it concerns CGC copies.

I've elected to do a New Mutants key issues list only because Fox announced X-Men spin off movies, X-Force being one recently named, and some characters in this series have already been plucked to make an appearance in X-Men Days of Future Past. Some on this list may be selected to appear in a future X-Men or the X-Men spin-off movies.

Marvel Graphic Novel #4 cover
Marvel Graphic Novel #4
  • First appearance of New Mutants team
  • First appearance of Cannonball
  • First appearance of Wolfsbane
  • First appearance of Sunspot
  • First appearance of Psyche

A whopper of a key issue with lots of first appearances, especially the first appearance of the New Mutants team. Also, many of these characters do become X-Force members, and since Fox is looking to expand the X-Men franchise with spin-off movies, it will only be a matter of time before these characters do make an introduction on the silver screen. Marvel Graphics Novel #4 will be the only bronze age comic on this list. It came out in September, 1982.

I should note that Psyche is Danielle Moonstar, now known as Mirage. Psyche was her first codename.

The character of Sunspot will make his big screen debut in the highly anticipated X-Men Days of Future Past coming to theaters this year.

eBay - Selection is surprisingly scarce for CGC copies, but then again, probably not too many bothered to get this issue graded since it was considered a junk comic not too long ago. Unslabbed options are a bit slim too.

ComicLink - One CGC 9.6 available here. Two CGC 9.8s were already sold for $375. The book is heating up.

  • First issue of The New Mutants
Titled series of The New Mutants comics kicks off with this issue. This copper age key comic is starting to gain some steam as are most copper age key issues.

eBay - A few CGC options. Mostly all 9.8s. You can still get this comic for $100 bucks or less if you shop around. That's CGC, however. Unslabbed copies are a much cheaper option, but if you don't remotely know how to grade or things to look for, chances are you'll pick up an unslabbed copy not worth getting.

mycomicshop - CGC 9.8 located here. Still under a hundred bucks for this New Mutants key issue.

ComicConnect - If you're looking for more CGC options, ComicLink has a CGC 9.8 in stock as well. Only one, though. The rest are unslabbed.

NewKadia - VF+ copy in stock at NewKadia.

  • First appearance of Amara Aquilla
If you follow The New Mutants or X-Men comics, you'd know that Amara Aquilla is the real name of the character Magma. This is her debut, though she does not acquire the name Magma nor joins the team just yet.

Major sleeper comic. It won't be easy to find. Not because it's rare. It's because many aren't thinking this issue isn't worth putting up for sale.

eBay - A few unslabbed copies available. No CGC here yet. Could very well change, though.

mycomicshop - Two copies in stock. Highest is a VF.

NewKadia - Five copies in stock here. Highest is low NM copy.

  • First appearance Amara Aquilla as Magma
This is the issue where Amara Aquilla first takes the superhero name of Magma, but she does not join the team yet. The character of Magma joins the New Mutants team in issue #12.

She has geothermal mutant powers. Magma can control the movement of Earth and tectonic plates, and she can also summon molten lava from the Earth's core. Pretty nifty.

I still have this key issue from back in the day, and it's no surprise that it's a sleeper. You can get unslabbed copies ultra cheap in high grades still.

eBay - Only a few unslabbed copies here. No CGC copies for this issue on the mighty eBay. That may change from the time of this writing. Doesn't hurt to click the blue eBay link to see the search results for this book there.

mycomicshop - Two copies available. Highest grade is once again a VF. Hope that changes by the time you click the link to check it out.

NewKadia - Two copies here. Highest is a VF+.

  • First appearance of Douglas Ramsey
Douglas Ramsey is introduced in this comic, and he becomes the New Mutant known as Cypher. As his superhero name states, his mutant power is the ability to translate any language, human or alien. He can also translate computer languages and decipher codes immensely quick.

He does not join the team in this issue, and was not a well-received character by fans nor comic artists who had to draw him. According to Louise Simonson, "He wasn't fun to draw. He just stood around and hid behind a tree during a fight... Every artist who ever did him said 'Can't we kill this guy?'

On top of that, she also remembers there was never a single letter of praise for the character. All they got were letters about how much they hated the character from fans. It wasn't until they killed the character in New Mutants #60 did fans start writing letters about liking the character.

eBay - A few unslabbed copies, but not very many. No CGC.

NewKadia - Four copies in stock. Highest is a NM. There's also a low NM as well.

  • First appearance of Illyana Rasputin as Magik
Although Colossus's sister Illyana Rasputin has been in the X-Men comics for quite some time and her character's initial first appearance is in Giant Size X-Men #1, this issue marks the first time Illyana Rasputin appears as Magik.

Minor key issue, and still a sleeper for now. Will probably be best to get snagged at your local comic shop or shops or a comic convention.

eBay - No easy find here on eBay as of yet. Only a handful of unslabbed copies.

NewKadia - Low NM copy is the highest here. There three copies total in stock.
