New Mutants #98 Value

It's true that a few copper age key issues rarely breakout, and there's only a few where the demand for them well exceeds the amount of copies floating around. New Mutants #98 is one of those rare exceptions.

A lot it has to do with the extreme popularity of the Rob Liefeld creation, Deadpool, and this issue is the first appearance of the mutant character. Let's take a look at the New Mutant #98 value how this first appearance of Deadpool has performed in the last two decades.

Overstreet 2002-03 Guide 33rd Edition:
Near Mint: $5.00
Very Fine: $0
Fine: $0
 Very Good: $0
Good: $0
Overstreet 2013-14 Guide 43rd Edition:
Near Mint (low): $100
Very Fine: $38
Fine: $18
 Very Good: $12
Good: $6

A little over a decade and this copper age key issue has gone up at least $9.50 at a low NM. Not too bad for a comic that came out in 1991. As you can see in the 2002 Overstreet Price Guide, only solid NM 9.4 copies were of any value. All grades lower weren't even listed, meaning they weren't worth even listing ten years after publication.

Now, it's a different story, though having a mid-grade copy of New Mutants #98 isn't really that great of an investment comic. Or are they? Here's where you may get baffled.

One could argue that a 9.2 and higher are copies worth really having. If you have a CGC 9.8, then you definitely have a great investment comic in your vault. However, according to eBay, even lower and mid-grade unslabbed copies are selling above their guide values.

eBay: $165.15 (CGC 9.2 NM- ) Jan 2014
eBay: $335 (CGC 9.8 NM/MINT) Jan 2014
eBay: $114.49 (unslabbed 9.4 NM) Jan 2014
eBay: $404.69 (CGC 9.8 NM/MINT) Jan 2014
eBay: $110 (CGC 9.0 VF/NM) Jan 2014 eBay: $215 (CGC 9.6 NM+) Jan 2014
eBay: $140 (CGC 8.0 VF) Jan 2014
eBay: $129 (unslabbed 8.0 VF) Jan 2014
 eBay: $87 (unslabbed 4.0 VG) Dec 2013
eBay: $134 (unslabbed 5.0 VG/FN) Dec 2013
eBay: $90 (unslabbed 6.0 FN) Dec 2013
eBay: $152 (unslabbed 7.0 FN/VF) Dec 2013
Pretty amazing that mid-grade unslabbed copies are selling for so much. An unslabbed 7.0 FN/VF selling only $13 dollars less than a CGC 9.2? I've been scratching my head on that one. Why wouldn't you just buy the CGC 9.2?

Then again, that's the roller coaster ride of fluctuating prices. It's obvious that the first appearance of Deadpool was in higher demand during December of last year than in the month of January of this year.

Still, we can see that Overstreet is way behind on values for this copper age goodie. The Merc with the Mouth and his first appearance needs to get some New Mutants #98 values majorly bumped up. After all, if it's selling way over guide on eBay of all places, a major overhaul on values should be in the works and fast.

  1. I have always liked Deadpool. I remember the first time New Mutants 98 came out. I bought one copy. What did I know then? I now got it CGC graded at 9.6 and signed by Stan Lee and Rob Liefeld. What would it be worth?

    1. Great to hear from you RG. CGC SS series are in a class of the their own, and the only real way to gauge what a 9.6 copy that signed by Stan Lee and Rob Liefeld is to check eBay's sold listings and see what other comics like yours are selling at. If you're copy isn't Signature Series and under the Qualified label (green), it won't be worth as much as an SS series.

  2. I wonder if new movie will spike or tank value? I got Venom, Deadpool, Gambit, and Jubilee's 1st appearances.

    1. I doubt it will tank the value...both Punisher movies were pretty bad and it didn't tank the value for his first appearance.

  3. I have a near mint copy of issue 98. not signed even though i met Liefeld briefly back in the early 90's at a comic convention. wouldn't mind selling if the demand is even there.

    1. Demand is there right now...Deadpool movie. Prices have sky rocketed on eBay for New Mutants #98

  4. I would be interested in a Deadpool key issue list, if you were interested in doing another short modern list. I am still on the fence about whether or not the increase in value for his books are only movie hype, or signs of a growing fandom.

  5. I just sold my 9.8 copy on eBay for $875.00. Pretty crazy!

    1. A friend of mine is offering a 9.8 copy to me for $800. Is this a good deal, or am I just riding the movie hype? I thought I would ask. And thanks for the Deadpool key issue list. Keep up the good work.

    2. Hi, Alan...this is just my opinion, but I'm pretty wary of New Mutants #98 or at least buying it right now in the current market. While I do believe NM #98 is a great key issue, it's definitely been peaking for quite some time and has been bobbing up and down within the $700 to $800 realms.

With the availability of this issue and because they're anything but rare, I'm cautious about investing in this issue again unless one can get a super deal on a high grade copy,. I mean super deal on it, but that's pretty unlikely at this time.

Movie hype greatly inflated this book and though I think it will sustain after the movie because I'm sure it will be a franchise, I think it might have trouble actually increasing significantly enough to where you'll get a decent return on investment at the price it's going for now.

Just my concerns about that, and I could be wrong.

    3. I appreciate the opinion. I have been wavering from buying a copy of it because of these very concerns.

    4. No problem Alan, thanks for the question. My answer is just my opinion though. I'm sure there are others who would disagree.

  6. Over 280,000 copies were published. Now is not the best time to buy. Wait until the movie hype dies.

  7. i purchased a NM98 CGC 9.6. Ddo you consider that a good investment. i have my concerns as well but Deadpool is not going anywhere fast right? I'm also hearing this could be the next Incredible Hulk 181, thoughts opinions or is that just the hype talking

    1. Depends on how much you paid for it. You can look at the CGC census on their website and see that this comic is not rare even in high grade. In my opinion it is not the next Hulk 181. Hulk 181 isn't scarce, but there are far fewer copies of Hulk 181 in 9.6 and 9.8 than New Mutants 98 in 9.6 and 9.8.
