It looks quite a bit of new additions has been added to The Guardians of the Galaxy cast in the past few months, and the total cast list looks quite impress with the amount of characters this movie has so far. Then again, what did we expect? After all, Kevin Feige did say he was really interested in doing a space epic flick only a few years ago. Not just a space sci/fi movie, but an epic sci/fi movie. With the new Star Trek franchise a major hit and the upcoming, anticipated, and fan nervous new Star Wars films coming up soon, it seems like an epic space flick seems like the right move, as well as quite a gamble.
So here's some of the new faces we expect to see as of late. Guardians will be the first Marvel movie to introduce the alien race the Kree to the big screen, and the first Marvel comic character of the Kree alien race to introduced to Marvel's cinematic universe will be Ronan The Accuser.
The character has been sporadically seen in various Marvel Comics titles such as Captain Marvel and Silver Surfer, and has gone toe-to-toe with the likes of such super-powered teams such as the Fantastic Four and the Avengers to name just a few. Actor Lee Pace, who played the character of Thranduil in The Hobbit, will be playing the role of this Kree bad-ass.
Aside from the well-known Kree race, another alien addition to this Marvel space epic is the character of Nebula. A murderous alien space pirate and mercenary, she is known as a super villain who desires control of the universe in the world of Marvel Comics. I know, not very original, but, hey, this is comics after all. Aforce to be reckoned with, Nebula played a big part in the famed and beloved Infinity Gauntlet comic series. Nebula was created by Roger Stern and legendary artist John Buscema.
The gorgeous 25 year old actress Karen Gillian, known for her role as Amy Pond in the extremely popular Doctor Who science fiction series, has been confirmed for the role of the villainous Nebula. Gillian has even shaved her radiant, Scottish red locks for the role, and debuted the new look at Comic Con.
Now, all we have to do is imagine her with the blue skin, and it seems like the blue hue will be the popular color for many of the alien characters so far. So far we have Yondu, Ronan the Accuser, and now Nebula.
Oops, and one more will add more smurfness to Guardians of the Galaxy as well. The character also happens to be a Kree alien as well. I'm starting to wonder if Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot will finally introduce the Skrulls with all this alien invasion going round in Hollywood nowadays.
However, I do like the actor that will be playing this character, and we all remember him from the movie Gladiator with Russel Crowe. That's right: Djimon Hounsou will be in Guardians of the Galaxy as Korath the Pursuer.
Created by Mark Gruenwald and Greg Capullo, Korath is a modern age comic character creation. He is a cyber-geneticist in charge of building cybernetic warriors for the Kree militia and is also an ally of Ronan the Accuser.
Stepping away from the blue skinned people, we now venture into a character that's more fury but probably not cuddly. Everyone is anticipating the character of Rocket Raccoon in the movie. While some say the character is going to be awesome, others kinda scratch their heads and think, A raccoon in outer space? Really? Yes, he is a raccoon and a brilliant military strategist and marksman with an affinity for big, heavy guns. This is science fiction after all.
Who will voice this outer space raccoon? Well, it seems that Bradley Cooper, the A-Team and Silver Linings Playbook star, will be bringing the character to life vocally. No surprise there considering that his girlfriend, the lovely Zoe Zaldana, is also in the movie as Gamora. Wondering what comic holds Rocket Raccoon's first appearance? Remember, how everyone was excited when Vin Diesel met with Marvel earlier in the year? Remember how I thought he was going to be the Vision in Avengers 2. Well, it appears I was way off. Way, way off.
It seems that Vin Diesels mug and already super-hero like body won't even be on screen whatsoever, only the actor's deep voice. Yep, it appears that Vin Diesel will voice the walking and talking tree, Groot! Actually, he is an extraterrestrial plant monster from Lord of the Rings. Okay, just kidding...about the Lord of the Rings part. Groot was created during the silver age by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Dick Ayers. Now for the ultimate head scratching casting confirmation. Yeah, I know, but it looks like John C. Reilly will play Rhomann Dey. In the comics, the character is known as Nova Prime, in which the title is given to the leader of the Nova Corps. However, it seems that the movie will be before Rhomann Dey acquires the title and position for Glenn Close is cast as Nova Prime.
To be honest, when I first heard about John C. Reilly being cast for the part, I seriously thought it was a prank, but it appears not. Hard to imagine him as the character, but who knows? I've been surprised before (Tom Cruise as Vampire Lestat), so we shall have to see.
All in all, this is Guardians of the Galaxy movie is starting to look pretty impressive with just the cast alone. And this is just the updated cast list. There's still the first round of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast that were confirmed much earlier.
I don't know about you, but I'm pretty excited about this movie coming out in 2015! It sure looks like it will indeed be an epic Marvel space adventure.
