Avengers Key Issues Part 2!

Welcome to Part 2 of the Avengers Key Issues list here at Total Comic Mayhem. If you missed Part 1, you can navigate your way back easy. If you didn't miss Part 1, then carry on and enjoy.

<< Part 1

Avengers #48 cover
AVENGERS #48
  • 1st appearance of Black Knight III
  • Origin of Black Knight III
The original Masters of Evil. Finally, The Avengers get a super villain team to put their might to the test. The original consisted of the original Black Knight, Melter and Radioactive man. This super villain team was put together by the original Baron Zemo, who became a popular foe for Captain America.

This isn't exactly the best line up for the Masters of Evil in my humble opinion, but it is a start. Nevertheless, this issue holds the first full appearance of Baron Zemo. However, Zemo did appear in flashbacks in Avengers #4 also, but was never addressed by name.

NewKadia - Unslabbed comic fans, three copies for sale! One is a FN+, the other a FN-, and the last a Very Good Plus. Extremely affordable copies for sale here if you're on a tighter budget.

mycomicshop - A mouth watering and tongue-wagging CGC 9.6 high grade NM+ is for the taking concerning this Avengers key issue. Also, another beautiful and eye appeasing CGC 9.4 NM can be bought here.

The last option is a low grade, unslabbed GD+. Want this key issue of the first appearance of the new Black Knight? Visit the link and make off like a bandit with your choice of this key issue comic investment.

ebay - Nothing better than variety, and ebay has quite a few of unslabbed and CGC graded copies available for this issue. Most of the CGC graded copies are higher grade and a bit more expensive. I believe I saw a CGC 9.6. Anyways, it never hurts to check it out if you're hunting for Avengers key comics.

  • Black Panther Joins

Out of pages of the Fantastic Four, The Black Panther assembles with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Whether he'll assemble in Avengers 2 is still unknown. Hopefully, he'll get into the third one. To see the first appearance of The Black Panther, just click the link and you'll be brought to my list of the Top Fantastic Four Key Issues. It's good stuff.

Anywho, this key issue isn't in super high demand and is still pretty affordable. Be sure to check out the links below to some places selling this silver age key issue if you're on the hunt for it.

mycomicshop - Concerning this issue where the Black Panther joins the Avengers, the fine folks at mycomicshop don't dissapoint. Three copies are available, and all are third party graded.

Two are 9.4 Near Mints, one CGC graded and the other PGX. The last option is CGC 9.0. All are still pretty affordable at the moment, but I doubt that will last long once Black Panther makes his way on the big screen and assembles with the Avengers.

ComicLink - If you're taste is even finickier and higher grade NM CGC copies are more your taste, then ComicLink has two copies just for you. One is an extremely high grade CGC 9.8 and the other a CGC 9.6, but both are for those who are truly serious about comic investing and having their investment's values rise quicker and more consistently.

ebay - Two or three CGC 9.4 copies and two CGC 9.0 I saw in ebay's search results, but unslabbed, raw copies are no problem finding on ebay. There are plenty.

Avengers #54 cover
AVENGERS #54
  • 1st appearance of new Masters of Evil
  • 1st cameo of Ultron

In my humble opinion, I like this Masters of Evil line up a lot better than the original. Mostly because Ultron put it together, under the guise of the Crimson Cowl, and it has Klaw.

As most comic geeks know, Klaw may have made his first appearance in the Fantastic Four comics, but he is the arch nemesis of The Black Panther. Not too surprising since Klaw did kill Black Panther's father.

This incarnation also has Thor's nemesis the Radioactive Man, Melter, and Whirlwind.  Radioactive man and Melter are the only two original members of Ultron's Masters of Evil incarnation.

The third Black Knight (Dane Whitman) is also a member of Ultron's Masters of Evil, but he is secretly a mole for the Avengers as an attempt to prove his worth into Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

mycomicshop - Only one copy here, and it's a lower grade, Very Good Plus 4.5. Not quite so sure why it's priced way above guide values, especially for an unslabbed copy.

ebay - Because of the movie hype of Avengers Age of Ultron, this key issue has flooded the market at prices way over guide. You won't have a problem finding this key issue graded or unslabbed. Paying for it may be a different story.

Avengers #55 cover
AVENGERS #55
  • 1st appearance of Ultron
This badboy is on the hot burner right now in terms of demand, and it has everything to do with the fact that Ultron is the main villain in the Avengers movie sequel coming out in 2015.

A sleeper key issue no more! The first appearance of Ultron in Avengers #55 has become an important Avengers key issue to get. Unslabbed mid grade to NM copies are selling on ebay way over Overstreet Guide values at the moment.

It's safe to say, you won't get this one cheap at the moment.

mycomicshop - A few lower grade and unslabbed copies here. The highest is GD/VG and the other two are in the GD range. If you're on a tight budget, these copies may be in your price range for a really hot investment comic at the moment.

ebay - Like I said, this book is hot right now, and there quite a few available options for both unslabbed and graded copies. However, high grade CGC copies are dropping for quite some mulah for the first full appearance of Ultron. Expect to pay over guide for this book now.

AVENGERS #57
  • 1st appearance of The Vision
Speculation of the Vision appearing in a future Avengers movie has spiked the demand for the first appearance of the Vision for quite some time. Even though Avengers director and writer, Joss Whedon has said multiple times that Vision will not be in Avengers 2 Age of Ultron, many comic book investors and collectors still are gunning for this Avengers key comic.

Why is that? Well, it's only a matter of time before Vision makes his debut on screen that's why! There's no way they would dismiss one of the Avenger's most popular  comic characters. This comic is way under-valued in Overstreet, and highly doubtful you'll get a copy at the price listed in OS.

ebay - This comic was all over the place on ebay a few months ago. Seems like it's dying down a bit. The price hasn't, though. You can still find loads of options for CGC and unslabbed copies there. Vision has not been announced to hit the big screen. When he is, this book will get crazy hot!

Avengers #58 comic cover image
AVENGERS #58
  • Origin of The Vision
First appearances may be important, but origins are important key issues also. This Avengers key issue tells the tale of how Vision came to be. Unlike the first appearance of the Vision in #57, this comic is still a sleeper.

People do want it, but the demand for it hasn't driven up the value for most grades in a crazy way yet. This is a good silver age key issue to get right now. You can still get this key at decent prices for many unslabbed copies. They may be slightly over Overstreet prices for various grades, but not insanely over like what #55 is going through.

Well, CGC 9.4 copies of #58 are being sold on ebay way over guide, but that's not surprising.

ebay - Shopping is good for this particular comic on the world's biggest market place. Prices are reasonable, but if you hunt for a bit, you'll surely be able to find a good deal. Visit the link to go directly to the search results for this Avengers comic.

Avengers #59 comic imageAVENGERS #59
  • 1st appearance of Yellow Jacket

I think it's safe to say that Henry Pym has indecisiveness disorder. The dude just can't make up his friggin' mind about what superhero he wants to be or what super power he wants his Pym Particles to achieve.

Yet again, Henry Pym switches from Goliath to another super identity, but Yellow Jacket? Serious?

A minor key issue that's pretty much a sleeper. I don't think demand for this bad boy is anywhere near luke warm, but it is surprisingly not that easy to find in CGC graded copies.

ebay - A few unslabbed copies, but even skimpier on the CGC selection for this key issue on ebay.

Avengers #60 cover
AVENGERS #60
  • Marriage of Yellow Jacket and Wasp

Finally, those two crazy kids Henry Pym and Janet van Dyne get married in this issue. Of course, a wedding never goes according to plan in comics, especially in a Marvel Comic.

NewKadia - Only one VG+ copy under $10 bucks at NewKadia. Just visit the link above if you think this comic is for you! You will have to scroll down a bit

mycomicshop - Highgrade CGC 9.2 low Near Mint copy and one unslabbed GD/VG copy both ready to be plucked at the blue magic link above. Just click it to snag either one of these copies and add it as another prized piece to your comic investing collection.

Avengers #63 comic cover
AVENGERS #63
  • Goliath becomes Yellow Jacket
  • Clint Barton (Hawkeye) becomes Goliath

It's official in this issue: Henry Pym says the hell with being an overgrown behemoth and slips into his new role as...uh...Yellow Jacket. That's not all, however. I wish it were, but it's not.

It seems that ole Hawkeye (Clint Barton) got tired of being a purple version of Robin Hood and takes up the mantle of Goliath. I'd like to see Whedon try to incorporate this story into a future Avengers movie. Actually I shouldn't encourage him nor the studio. They may actually try to do it.

NewKadia - Only one copy here at a low FN. Extremely affordable for Avengers comic fans and fans of Hawkeye! Be sure to check it out. Hopefully it's still there when you do.

mycomichop - three unslabbed lower copies available here. Extremely affordable!

  1. Avengers 54 & 55 are definitely going up. And it's been reported James Spader will play Ultron (though, I'm assuming he'll be voicing him).

    1. Avengers #54 & #55 are absolutely on the hot burner right now, and copies of various grades...CGC graded or not...are dropping well over guide.

I heard about James Spader cast as Ultron, and that's cool. Also the guy from Kick Ass will be playing Quicksilver in Avengers Age of Ultron.

Thank you for tuning in and commenting.

  2. Just to add on, in #36 Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch join the team. Also, #62 is the first "Mighty Avengers" title in the Avengers series.
