Incredible Hulk #181 Value

Created by Len Wein, Herbe Trimpe, and John Romita Sr., who designed Wolverine's original blue and yellow costume, who would've thought this little, mutant runt with the big sized, bezerker rage would slash his way to the hearts of comic fans all over the world?

Being a fan of Wolverine as a kid, I wouldn't have called it. Then again, I didn't know much about comics as an investment back then and didn't pay attention to The Incredible Hulk #181 value changes. I should have!

The 1st appearance of Wolverine is one of the best bronze age key issue comic books to invest in! In higher grades, The Incredible Hulk #181 value continues to rise.

Let's compare last years guide price values to this years:

LAST YEAR HULK #181 VALUES

9.2 (Low Near Mint): $1,700
8.0 (Very Fine): $680
6.0 (FINE): $240
4.0 (Very Good): $160
2.0 (Good): $80

---------------------------------------------------------------------

THIS YEAR HULK #181 VALUES

9.2 (Low Near Mint): $1,725
8.0 (Very Fine): $518
6.0 (FINE): $192
4.0 (Very Good): $128
2.0 (Good): $64.00

As you can from the values of Hulk #181 from last year to this year, there was a drop in value for every single grade except for a low near mint 9.2. The increase for a 9.2 was only $25 dollars between last year and this year.

Don't freak out now. It's more important to see how this comic has performed over the last few decades:

Overstreet 1982-83 Guide 12th Edition:

Mint: $16
Fine: $8
Good: $4

Overstreet 1990-91 Guide 20th Edition:

Near Mint: $200
Fine: $85
Good: 28

Overstreet 2002-03 Guide 33rd Edition:

Near Mint (9.4): $1,150
Very Fine: $595
Fine: $210
 Very Good: $140
Good: $70

Overstreet 2013-14 Guide 43rd Edition:

9.2 (Low Near Mint): $1,800
8.0 (Very Fine): $750
6.0 (FINE): $300
4.0 (Very Good): $200
2.0 (Good): $100

However, most serious comic collectors and comic investors know that the Overstreet Price Guide is a year behind each publication. Do these prices reflect current values? Not really!

Even more so, do these Incredible Hulk #181 values from the current Overstreet Price Guide reflect the demand for this key issue currently bolstered by The Wolverine movie slated for release next year? The answer is no!

Mycomicshop.com recently had a CGC graded 8.5 VF+ for auction that ended with a bid of $1,300. It went over last years price guide value of $1,190 for a 9.0 (Very Fine/Near Mint).

Furthermore, ComicLink has a few 6.5 CGC graded Hulk #181 copies, with the highest price of $755.00. That's well above this years guide value of a Very Fine copy at $518.00.

Does that mean they will sell at the price? Most likely since there is a "Wait List" for those issues at ComicLink.

Lets see some recent sales for Incredible Hulk #181 on ebay:

ebay: $562 (CGC 5.5 FN-) Apr 2013
ebay: $449 (unslabbed VG 4.0) Apr 2013
ebay: $1,775 (CGC 9.0 VF+/NM-) Apr 2013

You can obviously see that Overstreet is behind on the demand and value of what Hulk 181 is truly selling for. Recent sales are all above the guide price for them.

I predict next year's Overstreet Guide will have increased values above this years guide values. It's still safer to go for a higher grade like 9.6 or 9.8. If you can afford them.

9.8 copies are selling for $11,000 and above of this key issue comic book, and the double cover Incredible Hulk #181 is selling at $20,000 and above.

Those who know comic investing know that the higher grades for silver age and bronze age key issue comic books rise in value the fastest. Lower grades rise in value more slowly.

If you're on the hunt for an Incredible Hulk #181 (1st appearance of Wolverine) at 9.6 and 9.8 high grades, click the link to discover where you can get them.

I doubt these high grade copies will be up for sale long. After all, a VF+ Amazing Spider-Man #1 only lasted a few weeks before it sold for $22,500! No joke!

All I can say is God bless Herbe Trimpe, Len Wein, and John Romita Sr. for creating one of the most exciting, interesting, and best comic characters of all time - Wolverine!
